Seeking to write a grant to do a feasibility study on stone crab aquaculture. Stone crabs are unusual in that the claw is harvested without killing the crab. This gives one a renewable resource. Stone crabs live on average seven to eight years in the wild and spawn multiple times a year. The rate of regrowth on the crab claw is determined by several factors, including water temperature and food availability. A vibrant stone crab aquaculture industry will be environmentally responsible by ensuring a healthy breeding stock, will expose many to a delicacy that is currently one of the most expensive seafood products in America, and will create job growth in a new industry, while potentially increasing the profits of current commercial crab harvesters.
