WE ARE AARP
Tom Wiginton
Tom Wiginton hails from the small town of Jackson, Missouri. A former
diesel-electric locomotive engineer for the Southern Pacific/Union Pacific
Railroad, Tom is now a volunteer for AARP Missouri. One of his favorite memories
was AARP's Divided We Fail campaign to end partisan gridlock. As Tom put it:
"The campaign was pretty dramatic. By getting more people involved – more people
outside the AARP community – it gave a voice to our opinion and our
attitude...[and] had an influence on the outcome." Tom believes health care is
the most important issue affecting older Americans today. In his free time, he
likes to travel, visit friends, and is active at church.

OK Activists Prevent Electric Rate Increase
The Oklahoma State Senate was considering a bill that would have committed
Oklahomans to paying utility rates based on speculation about future laws. This
law would have caused consumers to pay higher utility rates for needless
expenses. AARP Oklahoma quickly mobilized their activists, who sent over 700
messages to state senators in less than a week! Their outstanding efforts caused
the State Senate to stop the legislation, thus preventing electric rate hikes
for millions of Oklahoma consumers!
