1) LinkedIn tip - put yor full name in your profile
Summary:
LinkedIn changed their search function so that it won't show you the last name for 3rd level connections. Tip - put your last name in your profile so that people can find you.
Details:
In November, LinkedIn changed the results of their search function, and they no longer show you the full name of a 3rd level connection unless you pay them. They now show the first name and last initial. That means that people looking for you won't see your last name, and it will be more difficult for them to connect with you.
However, if you want to be available to people, you can make it easier for them to find you by being clever and putting your last name somewhere in your profile.
Here are some options:
If you are a consultant named Thomas Brady, you could change your professional headline to say, "Small Business Consultant at Thomas Brady Consulting"
The professional headline is the best place to put it, since that shows up in search results, and in the Google "snippet" if people Google you by name
People would now be able to track you down more easily
Put your full name at the beginning of your Summary field
If you have a full time job, you could list a second business featuring your consulting business, where the business name contains your name, as I showed above
Put your full name in other locations in your profile where you think it would be easy to findNote: I wrote this blog a week or so ago, and it appears that LinkedIn is sometimes showing the full last name for 3rd level connections in search results. Since they haven't said anything on their blog about it, this may be something they are experimenting with, or it may be a technical snafoo.
Regardless, I think putting your last name in your profile is a good idea in case LinkedIn goes back to hiding it.
Happy Holidays, everyone, and good luck out there...
And thank you for reading this far down. Great tip coming next month, too...
Sincerely,
617-PATRICK
