Stories of Success: How to Harness the Power of a CEO
in Your 21st Century Job Search
By Markirah Shaw and Tara Sosa
Today's professional is faced with a potentially unnerving reality: That 20th century job search techniques are no longer adequate for landing a job. At the turn of the century, the job market was decidedly more straightforward than it is today in 2014. An unemployed individual could submit a crisp, well-formatted resume to an employment agency that would then send it to potential employers who were a good fit. A little over ten years ago, this strategy was sufficient for landing an interview because the demand for jobs was met by a healthy economy.
But with the turn of the century came two major events that fundamentally changed the landscape of the market: first, the widespread use of the Internet and later, the economic downturn of 2007. The Internet introduced a more fast-paced way to job hunt. An unemployed professional could visit online job boards such as Monster.com, upload a current resume, sift through hundreds of job opportunities in specialized fields, then apply to one that best fit his skillset. Though this process could be done within a few short hours, the wait for an interview was very long, if the offer even came at all. The problem with this approach occurs when you factor in the recent collapse of the economy. The number of job opportunities decreased while the demand for jobs increased, creating a job market that is more competitive than ever before. Many unemployed Americans are coming to realize that their resume is merely one of thousands released into the chasmic void of
Internet job boards.
Enter Rod Colón, career coach, radio personality, and CEO of Rod Colón Consulting. For over twenty years Colón worked in corporate HR management at JP Morgan and thus used his wealth of insider knowledge to then found the Empowering Today's Professionals Network and develop his innovative 4-tiered job search formula. Colón's unique system - comprised of Networking, a CEO of ME mindset, Value Proposition and the 7-Step Method - is an enhanced version of the 20th century approach to job searching as it demands of its users a heightened sense of confidence, decisiveness, and proactivity in their career management. Colón's method teaches that in order to successfully navigate today's job market, a person must see himself as a Chief Executive Officer who treats his career as a "business."
In this article, we cover the most prominent aspects of Colón's formula, as well as tell the personal stories of three of Colón's former clients whose stories will showcase how his "CEO of Me, Inc." paradigm is rigorous yet effective for anyone bold enough to pursue it wholeheartedly. These three clients went from unemployment, to studying with Colón, to becoming a confident and employed professional. After one-on-one career management coaching, they embodied and enacted Colón's modern method - shedding their old job search techniques and honing their networking skills - so that they became powerful CEOs of their own companies, their own careers.
CEO of Me, Inc. – The secret that's common sense.
A major component of Rod Colón's job search formula is adopting the mentality to run your career as a business, which he has coined the CEO of Me, Inc. paradigm. The idea of "owning" your career and taking an authoritative stance on your job search strategy is not exactly new. It's a concept that has been around for years as many career coaches or motivational speakers have encouraged people to take a more proactive approach. However, too often job seekers are corralled into motivational conferences and given advice, only to arrive home and lose perseverance a week later since they aren't given a solid plan to implement these techniques. Though well-intentioned, these general tips can be lacking.
Mitch Martin, a former client of Colón's, experienced this after his company, Roche Pharmaceuticals, downsized in 2012 leaving him without a position. In an interview with us, Martin described his experience with Roche's placement services and how, although they were a little helpful, nothing ultimately resonated. He recalled, "I thought, okay, I have the tools that I now need (they have an online resource center), but to be honest I was kind of floundering after that. I had their written materials about how to go about job searching in today's market and I read those and I tried to go about it, but I think I didn't get so much out of it."
Colón found a solution to this problem by taking a common sense concept, giving it a name and making it into something people can grasp. "Owning" your career with pride in your abilities, quite literally is elevated into owning your career. Not only has Colón branded the CEO of Me, Inc. paradigm, but from the basis of a fundamental mindset shift he has developed a detailed, structured method to follow.
What exactly is the CEO of Me, Inc. paradigm? What is this mindset shift? The root of Colón's mindset shift is adapting your way of thinking from the 20th Century into the 21st Century. To have a competitive edge in this job market, you need to think like no one else has thought before. Last century's professional viewed himself as a passive employee "chasing down" employers to give him a job*. But the CEO of Me, Inc. paradigm transforms the job seeker from a mere employee to a confident CEO in control of all operations of job searching in the same way a CEO oversees all divisions of his business*.
This challenges the traditional powerless employee model we're accustomed to. Suddenly this new perspective changes a future employer into a client, the interview process into a process of selling your skills, an interview into a business meeting, and your family or those closest to you into the powerful Board of Directors, whose security becomes a priority in business decisions. When you treat your career as a business and yourself as a CEO, you are taking full responsibility. This means that you alone are responsible for the success or failure of the company*. This new sense of accountability pushes the job seeker to be the driver of change and more importantly, gives them a sense of control.
Colón asserts that to enable this mindset shift it is essential to have mental toughness and a positive attitude. What he describes as mental toughness is the ability to cope and overcome adversity in order to achieve your goal*. Numerous studies have been done proving that positivity enhances performance, but one in particular illustrates the common sense secret behind Colón's CEO paradigm.
