Resumes For Executive Jobs - Tips on Length, Formatting and Style

Posted on 07. Feb, 2010 posted by Bill
<http://www.EmploymentDigest.net/author/bill/>

Job seekers often ask how long their resume should be. Some people can
barely stretch theirs to a single page, while others have difficulty fitting
it into four pages. What makes this decision so difficult? You want to
include all of the relevant information that will inevitably get you hired.
However, you also don't want to overwhelm the human-resources personnel who
are already swamped with work and could potentially be going through
hundreds or thousands of resumes. If yours is too long, HR staff will skim
it too quickly and miss the important points, or they'll simply file it into
the garbage because they don't have the time to read it.

The Three-Page Resume Debate

A two-page resume is considered the perfect length for executive jobs.
Career advice experts say there are some three-page resumes, but they also
note that three-page resumes should be a rare occurrence. If you talk to a
professional resume writer, his advice to those applying to executive
<http://www.EmploymentDigest.net/coaching> jobs is to make resumes two pages
maximum. However, there are always exceptions so this doesn't mean that you
should never have three pages.

For example, you might need three pages when you're switching from one
industry or career path to another. In this instance, your resume needs to
contain experiences, qualities and skills for both fields, which may require
you to fill an additional page.

Even in this instance, a resume writer will try to avoid writing a
three-page resume regardless of how far apart the two fields are. They feel
that if it's written well and you've done your homework, you should be able
to keep the information to two pages.

So how do you make things shorter while still including all the relevant
information needed to apply for executive jobs? Career-advice professionals
and resume writers will both tell you to start cutting the oldest
information first and work your way forward. You also want to be sure that
you write concisely to avoid redundancy.

Text, Font and Formatting

When trying to squeeze a resume into two pages, the most common trick is to
make the font smaller and shrink the margins. These tricks work to make your
resume the proper size, but they may also make the pages difficult to read.
As a general rule of thumb, your font or text should never be less than 10
or 10.5 points. As for the margin, never make it less than half an inch in
width on any one side.

Style and font is the next consideration when formatting your
<http://www.EmploymentDigest.net/resume> resume for executive jobs. Resume
experts will tell you that the font or text style you choose will
significantly influence how your correspondence will appear. Since you'll
need something that looks professional and flawless when applying for
executive jobs, you want to use classic fonts such as Arial, Courier Gothic,
Garamond, Tahoma, Times Brethren or Times New Roman.

You might be tempted to use artistic or fancy fonts on your resume, but you
need to be very cautious about these. Unless you're applying for an
executive position in advertising, graphic arts or other artistic fields
where there is an emphasis on this type of flair, chances are that the
person who reads your resume will simply toss it out.

Vary text to draw attention to the important elements in your document.
Bold, italics and underline as well as a variation in font size can be a big
help. Which elements are best to bring attention to, use headings to divide
the various segments, and many career advice experts also recommend bolding
things such as skills and achievements (one or two key words rather than the
full description).

Career-advice experts also warn job seekers about graphics. It's OK to have
some light graphic work, but be sure that it does not become the focal point
of your resume (again, unless you are applying for executive positions in
the art industry). In fact, you'll likely find that a simpler document will
look more professional than one with a page full of graphics.

When you combine these elements within your resume, you'll find them far
more effective when applying for executive jobs than if you tried to draft a
shorter or longer document. Ultimately, this is the goal that will get your
foot in the door and well on your way to landing that $100K job.

Article: Why Acing Your Interview for Job Is So Important (Associate

Why Acing Your Interview for Job Is So Important

By Joe Molyneux

Do you know why it's so important to ace your job interview? Here are a
couple tips that you can read about to get a better understanding of why
it's so crucial.

You have one more major step to do before you get the job that you want. The
interview. Sometimes it can be horrible, sometimes it can be easy. What
makes the difference? What gives you the extra edge that practically
guarantees that you'll get the position?

Well - it comes down to two things.

1. Knowing how to answer the questions effectively. They're going to spin
tons and tons of questions at you, and they are going to look for one thing
only: The "right" answer. The "right" answer is a very specific answer they
look for. If they get it, they hire you - if they don't, they let you go.
It's as simple as that for most job interviewers. Knowing exactly what to
say to their questions is the single most important thing that you can do
before going into a job interview.

2. Acting the right way, and asking your OWN correct questions. This is the
other thing that they "measure" when they have a potential employee at the
interview. They check how you act, how you interact with them, and what
kinds of questions you ask them. It's really, really easy for you to master
this one. There are tons of sites online that give you all the tools you
need, including:

- They give you sample questions and answers of the most common questions
you'll run into at your job interview. You can study this.
- After studying it you will know exactly what to say to them. You will
practically be their perfect candidate because you'll be saying all the
things that they want to hear.
- For all future interviews, and all your friend's interviews, you will be
able to tell them exactly what to say and do to make sure that they get the
job.

This is pretty much the only thing that divides the people between those who
get the job and those who don't. You'd be surprised how they decide on who
they are hiring. If you answer the questions as they want you to, you'll
practically guarantee yourself the position (Most of your competitors who
are going for the job probably don't have this edge, so you are way ahead of
them.)

Being ahead of the game and doing your research is the best thing that you
can do when going into a job interview. It's almost like studying for an
exam - except - this is the most important exam you'll ever take: The job
interview :)

If you go in there not knowing what to say and do you will seriously cut off
your chances of being hired. Way too many people "wing it" these days and
end up ruining their chances, even if they actually were the perfect
candidate. It's so cut-throat now because of all the people looking for
jobs, all the companies have these screens set up to do the work for them.

Write Catchy Cover
<http://www.EmploymentDigest.net/2009/09/write-catchy-cover-letters-to-get-j
ob-interviews/> Letters to Get Job Interviews

Posted on 25. Sep, 2009 posted by Bill
<http://www.EmploymentDigest.net/author/bill/>

If you want to get hired, you need to get job interviews.as many as you can.
So, what's the hands-down, single-most-effective-way to get job interviews?
Write well-structured, catchy cover letters.honestly, this is no joke.

Statistics show that even hiring managers from very small companies - on
average - get more than 50 applications for each advertised job. Hiring
managers from high profile mid-to-large size companies get hundreds of
applications for each advertised job. Lucky for you, the vast majority of
the applications - even from qualified job seekers - include ho-hum cover
letters that are treated like must-include-but-not-that-important additions
rather than what they are - the hiring manager's first impression of the job
candidate.

This is good news for the minority of job applicants who realize the
importance of well-structured, well-written cover letters. These applicants
use their letters to snag the hiring manager's attention and to get job
interviews. Their cover letters highlight experience in a personal way. They
make it clear the applicant understands the job responsibilities, has
researched the company, and believes he is a great match. The successful job
applicant uses the cover letter to show why hiring him benefits both the
company and applicant - he uses it to show the win-win - and therefore, to
get job interviews.

Okay, so cover letters are important if you want to get job interviews. How
do you write one?

The first step is to Google "write a cover letter" or any variation thereof.
Hundreds, if not thousands, of very good articles have been written on the
subject. Don't read just one. Read 5-10. Look for specific suggestions
rather than general ideas. Look for good-bad cover letter comparisons. Keep
reading until you're itching to start writing. Get to work on your cover
letter, and then put it away for a day or two. Read and revise before
mailing or hitting send. You'd be surprised at the mistakes you'll find when
you read with fresh eyes.

If you've read the how-to articles and have tried your hand at writing your
cover letters, but are unhappy with the result, take heart. There are many
resources to help you - from for-hire cover writing services to
downloadable, interactive software products that help you create cover
letters guaranteed to get you job interviews. The price for these services
is reasonable - usually $40 to $75 - and well worth the investment if you're
serious about getting a new job and improving your life.

So, now that you're written a great
<http://www.EmploymentDigest.net/coverletter> cover letter and received
calls for the job interviews, what's next? The successful job seeker learns
how to prepare for and handle the job interview. Again, look to the internet
if you're not a seasoned interviewee.but that's a topic for another post.

Best of luck writing catchy cover letters to get job interviews! Time to get
to work.your future is waiting!

Article: 10 Tips For a Reader-Friendly Resume (EmploymentDigest.net)

Posted by: "Eric Nilsson" ericnilsson@earthlink.net   eric_s_nilsson

10 Tips For a Reader-Friendly Resume

Posted on 02. Nov, 2009 posted by Bill
<http://www.EmploymentDigest.net/author/bill/>

Your resume must capture the reader's attention within the first 15 seconds
or risk being lost in the reject pile. One key success factor for your
resume is its readability, that is, how easily and quickly the reader can
absorb your information without loosing interest. To help you gain maximum
attention, here are ten tips to keep eyes focused on your resume.

1. Avoid small font. Nothing in your resume should be smaller than 11 point.
If your reader has to squint, he'll end up skimming over the important parts
of your resume.

2. Keep your font simple. They may not be the snazziest, but the two
easiest-to-read fonts are Arial and Times New Roman. Anything in your resume
that causes eye strain de-motivates the reader to keep reading.

3. Don't write large blocks of text. A resume reader's attention span just
isn't up to more than three consecutive lines of text. Beyond four lines and
your block of text gets ignored completely.

4. Use white space to separate bullet points. The purpose of bullet points
is to visually separate text so that your information stands out in
easy-to-digest bits. Without white space your list of bullet points takes on
the look of an extended block of text.

5. Don't try to squeeze too much onto the page. A densely packed resume
carries a 0% motivating factor-nobody wants to read it! Never sacrifice
readability in order to keep your resume to a certain page length.

6. Write concisely. The best way to insure your resume isn't too dense is to
keep your words to a minimum. Keep the fluff out so that your important key
words stand out loud and clear.

7. Keep your bullet points to two lines each. Bullet points are a shortcut
method of giving your reader a lot of information quickly. If your bullets
are longer than two lines you're probably trying to give more information
than necessary.

8. Use bolding to visually direct the reader's eye. Not only does bolding
break up the gray space, it helps draw attention to specific critical skills
and quantified information. It also helps slow the speed of reading to avoid
fast skimming of your information.

9. Use lines to separate resume sections. Simple lines work as a visual
break between the different types of information within your resume. They
help the reader make the transition between sections without taking up too
much valuable white space.

10. Don't get fancy with design elements. Multiple styles of bullet points,
line thicknesses and font styles can detract the reader's attention away
from what you want to say. Additionally, with electronic document
transmission, you can never tell if your design elements will be read
correctly or if they translate into non-readable coding.

Once you've implemented these ten strategies your resume will gain stronger
interest from potential employers and recruiters as they actually spend more
time reading your <http://www.EmploymentDigest.net/resume> resume. The
result is more interview requests. Improve your resume's readability and
improve your odds of getting hired quicker.

Cold Calling: A Time-Tested Method of Job-Hunting

There are many avenues of job-hunting for job-seekers looking for full-time
employment to follow. Certainly job-hunting on the Net is one method that
has been receiving the most attention lately, but there is a traditional
method of job-hunting that can be quite effective for you if you simply
follow all the steps outlined in this article. The method? Cold calling
potential employers.

Cold calling, or uninvited job-hunting, is a proven method of finding
employment. When you consider that four-fifths of the job market is
"closed," meaning you can't find out about available job openings unless you
dig for them, prospect for them, this method of job-hunting takes on great
importance. That digging, as well as all aspects of the process that
follows, is what this article is all about.

The first step in this process is compiling a list of all companies that you
might be interested in working for and don't worry if the list is a long
one. In fact, it is better to have a longer list than a shorter one since
your odds increase as your list gets longer. You could gather this list of
companies by focusing on a specific geographic area, a specific industry, a
ranking of the best companies to work for, or any other method. The point of
this step is gathering a list of companies that you are interested in
working for.

The second step in the process is gathering the names of the people who have
the power to offer you a job. This step is accomplished by calling each
company's main number and asking the receptionist (or department assistant)
for the name and title of the hiring manager in your field of expertise.
Don't let them give you the name of the Human Resources manager (unless that
is the department where you are trying to get a job) because your first
point of contact should be with the hiring manager in your field. This step
is essential -- you must get a name and title. Many hiring managers have
said they throw away any letter that is not addressed to them by name. Do
you open your junk mail? Be persistent.

The third step in the process is writing a dynamic cover letter. While you
may be sending out a great many letters, make sure that each letter is
individualized by addressing each to a named individual, and, if possible,
saying something about the company to showcase that you've done some
homework about the company. Remember that your cover letter is extremely
important since it serves as the point of first contact with the employer.
If you don't have much experience writing cover letters, then spend some
time to find cover letter resources. Enclose a clean copy of your resume
with each letter you mail.

The fourth step in the process is contacting the people you wrote to in the
third step. For many people, this step is the hardest. It means getting on
the phone and contacting these people and asking for a job interview. Be
persistent, even if the potential employer says there are no current job
openings, but do not be rude or too pushy. If the person is unwilling to
grant you a job interview, you should request an informational interview,
where you can gain more knowledge of the field and perhaps get the names of
more people to contact. Your goal should be to get as many interviews with
potential employers as possible.

Even if the majority of them say there are no current openings, interviewing
with them gives you the opportunity to dazzle them and then ask for
referrals to other employers who might have job openings available. Make
sure you are best prepared for these interviews by checking out some of our
job

tions.html> interviewing resources/questions.

If you follow all these steps you'll find cold calling to be a successful
tool in your overall job-hunting strategy.
