Networking: Like It Or Not, It Makes All The Difference

By Mark Feffer <http://news.dice.com/author/diceeditor/> | Aug 19, 2011

why job hunting advice doesn't really work unless you accept the realities
of the process. Whether you're just starting out or have 20 years of work
under your belt, the dynamics may not be fair but they're here, and they're
real, and if you want to find a job you have to deal with them. It's not
easy, but it's like gravity: When you jump off a cliff, you fall. Blaming
the laws of nature on the way down doesn't help.

Article: Most unusual resume mistakes (Yahoo Finance)

Posted by: "Eric Nilsson" ericnilsson@earthlink.net   norsemantechnology

Fri Aug 26, 2011 8:29 am (PDT)

Thanks for finding this, Gary.

Most unusual resume mistakes

Takeaway: A recent CareerBuilder survey reveals some of the more outrageous
statements hiring managers have seen on resumes.

With 13.9 million Americans seeking work, according to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, grabbing an employer's attention quickly and leaving a positive
impression is critical. According to a recent CareerBuilder study, nearly
half of human resource managers said they spend, on average, less than one
minute reviewing an application. The survey, which was conducted by Harris
Interactive© from May 19 to June 8, 2011, included more than 2,600 employers
nationwide.

When asked to recall the most memorable or unusual resumes, human resource
managers and hiring managers shared the following:

1) Candidate said the more you paid him, the harder he worked.
2) Candidate was fired from different jobs, but included each one as a
reference.
3) Candidate said he just wanted an opportunity to show off his new tie.
4) Candidate listed her dog as a reference.
5) Candidate listed the ability to do the moonwalk as a special skill.
6) Candidates -a husband and wife looking to job share -submitted a
co-written poem.
7) Candidate included "versatile toes" as a selling point.
8) Candidate said that he would be a "good asset to the company," but failed
to include the "et" in the word "asset."
9) Candidate's email address on the resume had "shakinmybootie" in it.
10) Candidate included that she survived a bite from a deadly aquatic
animal.
11) Candidate used first name only.
12) Candidate asked, "Would you pass up an opportunity to hire someone like
this? I think not."
13) Candidate insisted that the company pay him to interview with them
because his time was valuable.
14) Candidate shipped a lemon with résumé, stating "I am not a lemon."
15) Candidate included that he was arrested for assaulting his previous
boss.

Getting Personal on Your Resume

How Much Information Is Too Much?

By Kim Isaacs, Monster Resume Expert

Does your resume include information that puts you at risk for junk mail,
spam, scams or identity theft? Follow these tips from security experts to
protect your privacy while allowing the right people to find you.

Determine Your Risk Tolerance

Scott Germaise, author of Privacy Tactics: Protect Your Personal Information
Assets <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0974449709/monstercom> and
VP of product and project management at identity management and security
firm StandardID, advises job seekers to trust their instincts and assess
their risk tolerance. "Some people couldn't care less about having a great
deal of their personal information publicly available, while others feel
that any disclosure beyond the basics is too much," he says.

Jay Foley, executive director of the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource
Center <http://idtheftcenter.org> , also cautions job seekers to carefully
consider what information they include in resumes. "When you post your
resume online, you're sharing it with more than just one employer -- you are
sharing it with the world," he says.
