First Impressions Count on Job Interviews
By Dennis McCafferty | Posted 2014-02-19
Many tech professionals love science fiction, but most of them certainly wouldn't act out a favorite scene from a sci-fi TV show or movie in the middle of a job interview. But, believe it or not, one applicant actually did that. Unfortunately, a number of job applicants are completely clueless when it comes to deciding what's appropriate behavior when meeting a potential employer, according to a recent survey from CareerBuilder. Sometimes, they make decisions that can only be described as totally off the-wall, earning a quick rejection from the potential employer. While the following extreme examples demonstrate the humorous side of the interview process, this is a topic professionals need to take seriously, as many company interviewers come to conclusions about the worth of a candidate much more quickly than you'd think. "Employers want to see confidence and genuine interest in the position," says Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources at
CareerBuilder. "The interview is not only an opportunity to showcase your skills, but also to demonstrate that you're the type of person that people will want to work with. Going over common interview questions, researching the company, and practicing with a friend or family member can help you feel more prepared, give you a boost in confidence and help calm your nerves." More than 2,200 hiring managers and HR professionals took part in the research.
