TITLE: SR. DIRECTOR DEPARTMENT: Network Engineering SUPERVISED BY: Executive Vice President, Engineering and Operations Position Overview The Sr. Director of Engineering is responsible for developing the overall strategic vision and leadership for the engineering organization. This position will also be responsible for the development of the implementation strategy to continually evolve the company's network to sustain market leadership. The Sr. Director will be expected to build a "world class" team of technical resources required to support a high availability carrier class global Ethernet infrastructure. This is a key management position and requires the necessary leadership skills required to manage and motivate a group of highly skilled technical professionals. The Sr. Director will need to create a culture based on innovation and technical thought leadership. As the group leader, the Sr. Director will be expected to provide mentoring to the engineering staff and develop a plan to ensure their continued technical growth. The Sr. Director's core competencies should include in depth expertise the areas of network transport and equipment design, physical and logical configuration, diverse networking protocols, with an emphasis on Ethernet and IP. This position requires an individual that is well versed in the latest networking technology and develop strong working knowledge of the emerging Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) standards. This position requires the technical ability to engage at a tactical level, as required. This is a key leadership position for the company and requires the ability to work in a start up environment that is highly dynamic and fast paced. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES · Creation of Strategic and Tactical plan to support the evolution, upgrade, and augmentation of a carrier grade Ethernet network · Creation of a strategic plan to implement a global network deployment · Coordinate the engineering requirements for RFP submissions to ensure the selection of "best in class" technology solutions · Provide key decision making for the selection of network hardware, software, test equipment and · Participate in the development and selection of the company's IT and · Development of a network and collocation strategy that ensure optimal redundancy and the ability to deliver ultra high availability performance · Development of network test plans to facilitate interoperability and validate E-NNI certification for service provider networks · Development of a performance measurement strategy to enable advanced service level management of customer Ethernet connections · Development of detailed documentation and processes to establish engineering best practices · Establishment of company standards for the design, configuration, and implementation of network service nodes · Development of quality standards for the organization to measure and maintain employee performance · Provide managerial and technical leadership in all aspects of network engineering · Establishment of work priorities for the engineering team and the ability to make modifications based on the needs of the business · Advanced troubleshooting skills and the ability to coordinate a diverse team of technical resources in the resolution of network failures · Act as a representative for the company at key industry events, as well as participation in industry forums, particularly the MEF · Assist the Executive Vice President Director in the development of the network capital budget SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS · In depth knowledge of carrier transport technologies, including SONET, Wave Division, Ethernet, and IP transport systems, including the physical and logical aspects of each technology · Advanced knowledge in network architecture design, configuration, and implementation · Expert level knowledge of the OSI model service design, with strong emphasis on Ethernet & IP architectures · Detailed knowledge of all aspects of the maintenance and provisioning of both customer premise and core network equipment · Knowledge of Central Office and carrier hotel infrastructure, including 48V DC power plants, UPS and Generator plants · Strong working knowledge of PC applications including MS Office, Visio and various other Operational Support Systems · Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision making ability · Advanced knowledge regarding the architecture design and configuration of a wide array of networking equipment, with emphasis on Ethernet technology · Advanced knowledge of multiple network equipment architectures and associated operating system software, preferably Cisco, Juniper, and Alcatel platforms · Knowledge of evolving network technology and trends · Advanced knowledge of carrier transport technologies, including SONET, Wave Division, Ethernet, and IP technologies, including the physical and logical aspects of each technology · Advanced knowledge regarding the design and implementation of Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) Protocols · Advanced understanding of key technologies including 802.1Q, QinQ, 802.1ah (PBB), PBT, MSTP, MLT/LAG, CFM, UNI Ethernet, IP, MPLS · Advanced knowledge of Ethernet concepts and experience in the design and implementation of Layer 2 networks · Advanced knowledge regarding the configuration of Ethernet connectivity, including EPL, EVPL, ELAN, VLAN, and NNI · Expertise in the use of Protocol Analyzers and other test equipment to detect and analyze anomalies in network traffic flow · Experience in the use of traffic generation equipment to assess network traffic flow performance under various load scenarios · Strong knowledge of industry standards (ie: IEEE, IETF) with emphasis on the MEF initiatives · Advanced knowledge of IP Sub Netting in WAN architectures · Strong knowledge of Central Office and carrier hotel infrastructure · Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision making ability · Advanced troubleshooting skills and the ability to coordinate a diverse team of technical resources in the resolution of network failures · Ability to quickly grasp abstract concepts and adapt them to the practical application of technology · Strong knowledge of industry leading network surveillance, service level management ( · Advanced knowledge of IP Network Concepts, Design and Deployment · Thorough understanding of IP router technology, including Cisco, Alcatel, Juniper, · Solid understanding of IP and IPv6 addressing, unicast and multicast routing, and switching. · Thorough understanding of EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, MPLS theory and design · Well-versed regarding the best practices for implementing Layer 2 and Layer 3 CoS and QoS · Ability to author technical documents for use and review by executive management · Ability to deliver technical presentations to senior management, customers, and the board of directors · Experience in working with customers in a service provider environment EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS · Bachelors in Electrical Engineering or related technical discipline.
