Job interviews <http://jobs.aol.com/hub/job-interviews> can be challenging,
in part because there is so much that can go wrong.

There is dressing appropriately, of course, and ensuring that your resume
<http://jobs.aol.com/hub/resumes> is up-to-date and error-free. But there
are other, more subtle factors, such as body language, that interviewers pay
keen attention to.

More Companies Tap Into Alumni Networks to Re-Recruit Best of Former Workers

By MELISSA KORN
<http://online.wsj.com/search/term.html?KEYWORDS=MELISSA+KORN&bylinesearch=t
rue>

Corporate alumni networks can make it easier for former employees to become
future employees.

Though formal alumni networks have existed for years—consulting firm
McKinsey & Co. has coordinated activities for its ex-employees since the
1960s, for example—they have made a resurgence as professional-services and
technology companies, among others, struggle to find skilled workers to fill
their ranks.

Former employees also are cheaper to hire because firms can avoid external
recruiters and a prolonged slog through résumés.

Though companies that provide professional and business services, such as
consulting, hired the most employees of any industry in August—839,000—it
still had the highest number of openings—623,000—at the end of that month,
according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Beat the Job Search Blues

Okay, admit it. You hate job-hunting. Lots and lots of people feel that way.
The economy is lousy, there aren't that many employers hiring for someone
like you, and you're thinking this could be a long job search. Too often,
discouraged job hunters project a gloomy outlook.

Face facts. Today's job hunt is likely to take longer than six months. For
high level executives, or those in failing industries, it can be over a
year. It's easy to sink into the blue but they can paralyze your job search.
You must change the negative self-talk and get a handle on your fear and
anxiety. Devaluing yourself or moping - and feeling sorry for yourself will
not land you a job.

Here are some action steps that will enable to you to fight back and take
control over your future, and to get rid of the job search blues:

10 Tips: Managing The Year Of Diminished Career Expectations

Posted by Meghan M. Biro <http://www.glassdoor.com/blog/author/meghan-biro/>
. October 25th, 2011

There are lots of people writing about how to do resumes or manage a job
search <http://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm> , but not too many who are
willing to admit there's an elephant in the living room. But there is, and
I'm going to give you a few tips on how to deal with it.

The elephant is your job - the one you're in and want out of, or the job
<http://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm> you're considering taking to get away
from the one you have. Chances are it's not the job you want, or the one you
trained for or think you deserve. It pays the bills, but it doesn't get you
excited. It doesn't use all your skills. The workplace culture or
environment leaves something to be desired. Maybe the commute is killing you
and the person in the next cube eats sardines every day for lunch. Maybe you
don't even have a cube.

Welcome to the new job reality: diminished expectations.

We all want a great job <http://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm> but until the
economy turns around, a good-enough job will have to do. But no one can
afford to treat a job as though it's just 'good enough.' To survive - both
in the job and in your head - you'll have to bring your A game every day.
Even if it is a B- job.

Prepare Your Elevator Speech

by Margot Carmichael Lester, Monster Contributing Writer

"I was alone in the elevator with the hiring manager for a temp-to-perm job
I really needed," recalls temp Ben Whittle. "I knew I should say something
-- anything -- to make the case for picking me. But I was nervous. I didn't
want to sound stupid, so I opted to say nothing. I missed a great
opportunity and ended up not getting the job."

How many times have you been unable to find the right words in an impromptu
situation like this? Selling yourself on command can be tough, particularly
when you have to do it in a short time period. This is why you should
develop an elevator speech, or a sound bite that details your professional
story, before you need it. Follow these five pointers to craft it.

The Top Eight Rules of Networking

By Kelly Eggers

You know the type. The people with obnoxious laughs, pushy pitches, and the
ability to corner you at industry conferences and talk about themselves
continuously for what seems like hours? The ones who clearly mean well, but
their lack of etiquette can make you wish you hadn't even gone?

Here's a friendly suggestion: Don't be that person.

Networking is a critical part of any job hunt, yet it's probably the easiest
thing to get wrong. Using living, breathing connections works better than
blindly sending out resumes over the Internet, but for many, approaching
people they don't know for help finding or getting a job is uncomfortable
and nerve wracking.

Knowing a few etiquette guidelines can help you keep your conduct
aboveboard, and perhaps ease a few fears about putting yourself in front of
the well-connected.

The next time an unemployed friend tells you "I'm looking for anything" or
"I'm open to any job," you have my permission to pull out one of those
game-day big fan hands and gently slap them.

Otherwise, please find another way to make it clear that just like a
quarterback, they're not going to send the ball into the end zone if they
aren't clear about their target.

"Anything" and "nothing" are like flip sides of a music album - and they
both sound like white noise, all but invisible and untraceable.

Anything is as hard to picture as it is to remember - and your friend really
needs people to remember her when a great job
<http://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm> or prospect comes up in conversation.

But how will you or her other friends know it's a great fit if her search is
so open-ended and vague?

How to Reapply After a Rejection

Don't give up! Here's how to tweak your resume and try again.

June 22, 2010

By Lisa Vaas

She was a senior human-resources professional who was laid off in summer
2009 from her job at large hospital in Texas. After the layoff, she did
everything she knew from her years in HR would help her land a job. She woke
early every day, put on her business suit, networked like mad, lunched with
contacts ... the whole nine yards.

Still, no job offers came; just those cold-as-silicon, automatically
generated rejection letters. You know the kind: vaguely worded, anonymously
sent e-mails saying they've received your application and will contact you
if they see a fit.

Yeah, right. Don't hold your breath.

Reinvent Yourself To Land A New Job

Posted by John Sumser <http://www.glassdoor.com/blog/author/john/> .
October 27th, 2011

The New York Times recently ran a story about the new Catsup from Heinz
<http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/26/business/media/ketchup-moves-upmarket-wit
h-a-balsamic-tinge.html?_r=2> . It's got Balsamic Vinegar in it. Can you
think of anything more mundane than Catsup? Yet, Heinz builds their empire
on it and has reinvented it a kajillion times.

Remember 'Anticipation'? How about the ever present squeeze bottle. Do you
recall when they started marketing the lid on the bottom? It's all plain old
high profit Catsup.

If you've had more than a little bit of career, someone has undoubtedly told
you that you need to reinvent yourself. If you're like me, that sounds like
a big task and at least a little impossible. I wonder, 'How do I do this
reinvention thing?"
