TOPIC

Many times candidates feel like they don't have anything to say in a job interview, or are overwhelmed by looking at a shopping list of questions they might be asked. It can be difficult to understand how experiences that seem insignificant to them can really be crucial to an employer's hiring decision, and then how to concisely structure answers to those questions.

Job interviews are simply about an employer getting to know a candidate beyond what they have read on a resume. I developed the TODAY acronym as a way for candidates to focus their preparation, and remember those experiences that will help them be seen as the ideal candidate for the job. When they walk into an interview armed with topics to discuss, they are naturally more confident and relaxed, which makes the employer in turn get a
better overall impression.

This course also covers the finer points of an interview such as establishing rapport, avoiding the Walk of Silence from the receptionist desk to the interview, negotiating the offer,
and preparing for the 5 questions they will ALWAYS be asked.

SPEAKER

MELANIE SZLUCHA: In her business, Red Inc , Melanie has coached numerous job seekers to become more confident and prepared during the interview process as well as written resumes that clearly convey a candidate's benefits to the company.

Melanie has over 15 years of experience as a hiring manager, and 5+ years as a job search coach. She has grown her business primarily through networking and word of mouth, and teaches clients to use those same skills to ramp up their search.

She has an undergraduate degree in Business and an MBA from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY.

for being let go, and you may feel bitter or angry toward your former
employer. You may be unsure of how you will handle financial obligations,
and it may create strain in your family relationships.

It's important to handle getting fired as well as you can, since anger and
frustration won't help you out of the situation. Here are some tips to help

Article: Why your online application may not be secure + Search comp

Why your online application may not be secure

Statistics tell us that the next best thing to networking your way into a
job is to apply directly through an organization's website. Your chances are
about six times greater of actually getting a job when you apply via a
company website as opposed to a major job board. What could be the problem?
In most cases, there is no problem. From time to time there is a major
issue: the company is not protecting the private information you've
submitted through their website.

In googling for information on various organizations on behalf of a client,
I came across his information on the website of a financial company in which
he had submitted his resume about one year ago. His resume just popped up
for all of the world to see. Here are a few reasons why it could be an
issue:

If your current employer finds your information, they will become aware that
you are in an active job search. This could hurt your ability to retain the
job and will certainly influence the chances of you getting a promotion.

How to search company websites for jobs more effectively

The chances are six times greater

g.html#%21/2011/05/going-from-a-percent-chance-of-being.html> that you will
get a job offer from a position you applied to via an official company
website (3%) as opposed similar jobs in which you applied by way of a well
known job board (.45%). Many of us already know to go directly to company
websites but how can we do so more effectively?

Let's say you are looking for a job in advertising. From time to time, you
will google search for advertising agencies in your local area. You'll find
a few (or perhaps many) agencies of interest and look at their job listing
section.

Article: Laughable Advice (Jeff Altman)

Laughable Advice

By Jeff Altman

Let me start off by saying that having been in recruiting for almost 40
years, most job hunters still do the same things in their job search that
did not work for them when they graduated from college. Writing one resume
and sending it out over and over again is like the holy grail for most job
hunters. To me, it is like the story of the broken watch--it is right twice
a day but does not work the rest of the time.

Knowing this, I have developed some compassion for job hunters who still
send out "their resume" to every job. Often when I receive a resume that
does not seem to fit a job, I send off a response to them:

"I'm sure I don't have to tell you how competitive the market can be. When
firms are looking at people and their experience, resumes need to spell out
the 'fit' for the role and frankly, yours doesn't do a good enough job in
doing so."

"This isn't to say that you don't have the experience; it is saying that
your resume needs to be improved to make it obvious that you fit what the
institution is looking for. Once you send me a revised resume that
demonstrates the fit, I would be happy to speak with you and represent you
for this role."

Do You Sabotage Yourself by Using Weak Language?

By Bonnie Marcus

The ability to communicate effectively and confidently has a dramatic effect
on our ability to advance our careers. Yet many of us fall into the trap of
using weak language that sabotages our efforts to present ourselves with
authority and confidence.

I would just like to say that I may not know as much as some of the
communication experts out there, but I feel that women undermine their
credibility time and time again by using minimizing language.

This one sentence says it all! By using the words "just", "I feel", and
stating that I may not have as much expertise as perhaps other do, I have
reduced my credibility to almost zero! How many times have you heard women
communicate this way? How many times have you yourself used this type of
minimizing language?

See how to arrest verbal saboteurs here:

Article: How Employers Choose The Right Job Candidate (Net-Temps)

How Employers Choose The Right Job Candidate

Some of the things that we hear most frequently about resumes in a
competitive job market are individuals mentioning their fear of being a
"mature" job seeker. Though there is legally no bias, job-seekers need to do
everything on a subconscious level to make our resumes fall in the bell
curve of right where they should be, in terms of level of experience - and
time in the work place.
