Avoid a Job Hunt Rut

Does this sound familiar? You see a post for that dream job and promptly
submit your resume – only to hear nothing for days, then weeks. You wonder
why you didn't receive a response as you continue to scour postings for the
next position that seems like an ideal match.

If your job search has hit this type of rut, take heart. It doesn't
necessarily mean you aren't just as qualified as your competition. It could
just mean your job search strategy is all wrong.

In a job market this tough, you need to be more aggressive than ever to get
noticed by hiring managers and recruiters. The key is to gain as much
exposure as possible. The more you put your resume out there, the greater
your chances for grabbing a hiring manager's attention.

Here are a few ways to jump start your stalling job search:

*Utilize job boards.* Employers once relied solely on high-priced
headhunters to gain access to highly-qualified candidate pools. Now, they
can turn to the Internet – namely, job boards – where job seekers post their
resumes. The boards match qualified applicants with open positions based on
employers' customized criteria.

While most job seekers are familiar with mainstream boards such as Monster,
they may not realize there are literally hundreds of boards tailored by
industry, profession, or diversity group. For those concerned with privacy
issues, most boards even offer the option of keeping certain details of your
contact information confidential until an employer wants to reach you. Most
allow job seekers to post a resume free of charge, so there's really no good
reason to ignore these opportunities.

*Send a follow-up letter.* If you have already sent in your resume only to
yield no result, don't be afraid to take another shot. Rather than just
submitting your resume a second time with a standard cover letter, use a
follow-up letter. This approach is particularly useful if you've updated
your resume recently and would like a chance to submit the new-and-improved
version. A follow-up letter allows you to reintroduce yourself while
demonstrating you are very serious about a company or position.

Unlike making a telephone call to follow up, a letter doesn't catch the
employer by surprise or put him or her in the awkward position of talking to
you without the benefit of your resume for reference. Keep the letter short
and to the point, but be sure to focus on why you would be ideal for the
position. The goal is to lure the reader into revisiting your resume, giving
your application a second chance.

*Prepare a 30-second speech about yourself.* Whether you attend an organized
networking event or happen to run into a former colleague in the park, you
should be prepared to capitalize on opportunities to establish professional
contacts that can lead to your next job. Many job seekers lament that
networking events, like those sponsored by college alumni organizations or
professional associations, are a waste of time. After all, you meet so many
new people and have such a brief window of time to make any impression at
all. Before you've finished with small talk, the conversation is over
without even getting to the reason you were there in the first place.

Going in prepared, however, can make all the difference. Creating and
practicing an "elevator pitch" – a 30-second speech summarizing your
professional qualifications and goals – can make the most of the limited
time you have to establish new contacts. As an added bonus, you will also
eliminate those terribly awkward moments when you struggle for what to say.

*Take advantage of online networking sites.* Setting up profiles on popular
networking sites, such as LinkedIn, not only provides you with an online
presence for your professional qualifications. It also helps you reconnect
with former colleagues with whom you've lost touch. The wider your network
of contacts, the more potential opportunities will come your way. Joining
most of the popular online networking sites is free, so there's really no
excuse not to do it.

Of course, for any of these techniques to be effective, you need to be sure
employers can not only find you, but will be impressed with what they see.
That's why it is crucial to make sure your resume is up to par and rich in
keywords before these methods can jump start your job search.

Hidden Corporate Scandal: CEO's Who Laid Off the Most Workers Rake in the Most
Treasure
Sarah Anderson, Alterationet September 1, 2010

The CEO of the world's biggest tech company brought down by a Reality TV
"cougar." It's a hard story to resist.

And indeed, the business press has had a field day with the saga of Mark Hurd,
the Hewlett-Packard chief who was recently fired for falsifying expense reports
to conceal a relationship with a woman from a truly bizarre TV dating show.

After starring in a few soft porn movies, Jodie Fisher, a 50-year-old with Lady
Godiva tresses, got a gig in 2007 on NBC's "Age of Love," in which a male tennis
pro was to choose a mate from groups of over-40 "cougars" or under-30 "kittens."

Fisher didn't get the red rose, but she did get a contract job with HP. Her
task: introduce Hurd to clients at parties. Seriously -- you can get paid for
that. But then Fisher claimed she lost the job because she wouldn't sleep with
Hurd. He said she was merely on the wrong end of conscientious cost-cutting,
but he paid her off anyway. The board got wind of the sexual harassment
settlement, discovered the phony expense reports and gave Hurd the ax.

Titillating? Mildly. The biggest scandal at HP? Hardly. The biggest scandals
at HP haven't made the headlines because they are so commonplace in Great
Recession Corporate America. CEO's in one company after another are throwing
workers onto the unemployment rolls and dodging taxes to boost short-term
profits and fatten their own paychecks. They are shifting the burden of a poor
economy onto the public purse -- while continuing to line their own pockets.

According to a new report by the Institute for Policy Studies, CEO's from the 50
firms that have laid off 3,000 or more workers since the onset of the crisis
took home nearly $12 million on average in 2009. That's 42 percent more than
the average for CEO's of SandP 500 firms as a whole.
At HP, Hurd made $24.2 million in 2009, while cutting 6,400 jobs. That was on
top of 24,600 layoffs he announced in September 2008 after a merger with EDS.
His slash and burn, merge and purge approach was a stark departure from the
bno-layoffb policy of HP cofounders William Hewlett and David Packard, who built
the company from a garage operation into a global giant.

Messrs. Hewlett and Packard seemed to understand what more and more research is
showing: Mass layoffs are often bad for business. Employers have to deal with
morale problems among remaining staff and then all the costs related to hiring
and training new workers when conditions improve. A University of Colorado
survey of SandP 500 companies from 1982 to 2000 found no evidence that
downsizing leads to increased returns on assets. In fact, stable employers --
companies that have less than 5 percent annual staff turnover -- outperformed
companies that had major layoffs.

Today's Hewlett-Packard illustrates still another troubling trend that has
largely escaped the headlines: massive corporate tax avoidance.

Under current law, U.S. corporations face a 35 percent tax rate on corporate
profits. Hewlett-Packard, under Hurd, sent $47 million to Uncle Sam in 2009
federal corporate income taxes, a mere 2 percent of the company's reported $2.6
billion in pretax domestic net income.

As a result of various tax avoidance schemes, U.S. corporate income taxes
overall have plummeted from almost a third of all non-Social Security federal
tax revenues in the 1960's to only a sixth of total taxes today, according to
Citizens for Tax Justice.

Since paying taxes apparently gives rich execs the hives, it's routine for big
companies to shield their CEO's from taxes on perks. In 2009, HP gave Hurd
$29,028 in such "tax gross-ups" to offset taxes related to his use of the
company's private jet and other perks. Over the past three years, Hurd's
gross-ups have totaled $137,924.
After the board gave Hurd the blade, he walked away with a severance payout of
cash and stock estimated at more than $28 million. That should tide him over
until his next executive post, which may not be long. According to the Wall
Street Journal, Hurd claims he received a recruiter call the day after he left
HP.

Meanwhile, who knows how many of the tens of thousands of HP employees who have
lost their jobs are stuck collecting unemployment checks. That's the real
scandal at HP.

Thanks for the article. I can't say I am surprised because I am not.
It is what is wrong about our system and these types of stories are affecting
too many of us in our own lives. I believe in Capitalism but I don't believe in
what many if not most CEOs are doing with large companies. It is simply wrong.

We all make mistakes. While obviously you want to avoid making them in
the first place, the real secret is in what you do to recover from them.

In December's issue of Career Tips, I presented a technique for
addressing objections you might encounter in an interview, networking
meeting, or other situation where you are trying to have an influential
conversation. In the current issue, I show how you might apply that
technique to help you recover from your own mistakes.
