Company: Open Mile
Location: Boston, MA
Open Mile is disrupting the $60 billion truckload transportation brokerage industry.
The company is creating the first end-to-end automated transportation brokerage service by applying a combination of enterprise and consumer oriented technology to a massive, fragmented and manual-intensive industry. This automation will allow for breakthrough pricing and operating efficiency and the chance to dominate a massive industry. In an industry where several "traditional" brokers have proven they can grow from $0 to $250m in revenues in under four years Open Mile is uniquely positioned to exceed even those lofty achievements.
The United States truckload transportation industry is a massive $300 billion industry fragmented across 200,000 carriers where the vast majority of these companies are small businesses (88% have less then six trucks). Transportation brokerage is a $60 billion subset of this industry, the role of transportation brokers is to connect shippers (enterprises who need freight shipped to their customers) to the 200,000+ carriers in the market. The brokerage industry itself is highly fragmented too, with approximately 18,000 brokers making on average 20% markup. These brokerages are highly manual operations with payroll making up 60%+ of the total cost structure. They are boiler-room type operations with people using phones, faxes etc to sell and communicate with shippers and carriers.
Open Mile believes that by combining enterprise and consumer technologies they can operate 3x more efficiently than the current industry leaders such as; CH Robinson and Echo Logistics. By doing so, Open Mile is able to cut the cost incurred by shippers up to 40% and provide a disruptive service and platform to shake up the industry at its core.
Carriers like working with Open Mile because they are a no-hassle, self service virtual sales force bringing qualifed opportunties to their door that they did not exist othewise. For shippers, the value proposition is better "service" defined as percent of shipments delivered on time, cheaper rates compared to other brokers, and access to faster answers and information.
The company's sales strategy for shipper acquistion is to focus on "medium sized" shippers ($200m-$2b in annual revenues) who move between 5,000 and 100,000 truckload shipments per year. It's a radiate and penetrate strategy where the company generally starts small with a given shipper and then seeks to grow their footprint over time.
Today, Open Mile operates as a "better" or "tech enabled broker." They are not to be confused with an exchange or a marketplace. As Open Mile matures, opportunities exist to expand beyond their online brokerage operation. There are dozens of application and value added serintices that they can offer their carrier and shipper customers to help them optimize and run their business more efficiently.
Open Mile was founded and is led by seasoned and serial entrepreneurs with not only deep domain supply chain expertise but also building consumer Internet companies. This unique blend is what drives Open Mile's unique vision and approach to the truckload transportation brokerage and how they intend to leverage their years of experience to break down barriers for change.
To date, Open Mile has received funding from top-tier Venture Capitalist' Charles River Ventures (CRV) and Globespan Capital Partners.
THE ROLE: VICE PRESIDENT OF MARKETING
Open Mile is developing a dynamic company capable of disrupting an entire massive industry. The transportation industry has tremendous "whitespace" from a marketing perspective. We are building a movement, a tidal change in how freight brokers are viewed in the world of transportation. We are seeking a Vice President of Marketing to take advantage of this opportunity. The goal is to build a lead generation machine, develop a wildly engaged community of shippers and carriers as well create the most compelling brand in the transportation industry.
This role will combine the professionalism of enterprise marketing with the dynamic approaches from the consumer sector. First and foremost, is to build a lead generation machine that can feed our growing sales organization. In an industry devoid of professional lead generation activities this role is tasked with creating a repeatable, measurable lead generation process for both our shipper and carrier communities. Your arsenal will be "free" tools first and graduating into various paid online/offline acquisition channels when justified. There is no magic bullet here; lots of tinkering will be needed.
Beyond lead generation, you'll be responsible for engaging the community of shippers and carriers. From the smallest carrier to the biggest shipper you'll be developing formal and informal programs and campaigns designed to augment our product offering and drive daily usage.
Finally, you will build the Open Mile brand. Directionally, we visualize a combination of other successful consumer and enterprise models. Think the engagement of the Yelp Elite, the fanaticism of the Apple Fan boys and the loyalty of the Zendesk community.
The best candidates will have done this before either as a leader or a top lieutenant a rapidly scaling organization. You're a "doer" not just a strategic thinker with a proven history of executing each of the above activities. Everything you do is metric driven and decisions are justified with math.
We're not concerned if you know transportation or supply chain, although it is a plus. We can teach someone the space, what we care about more is your marketing prowess. If you've worked with SMB's in the past that is preferred as is experience with startups. We're more impressed by results that can be backed up with metrics; campaigns that stir emotion, are truthful vs. contrived or forced, and you're the type of person that people want to follow.
Mission:
Build the most successful marketing organization in transportation industry that drives massive amounts of shipper and carriers leads to the website and engages a passionate community of users on both sides.
Desired Outcomes:
* Develop a lead generation machine that ensures all of the sales team's outbound calls are on qualified leads for shippers and carriers.
* Make Open Mile the undisputed leader in relevant "free" transportation acquisition channels ranging from anything from SEO to social media to referral programs.
* Experiment with various paid acquisition channels for shippers and carriers that are both online and offline as well as traditional and out of the box.
* Drive a minimum 75% active rate of the Open Mile shipper and carrier communities.
* Produce relevant daily short form content as well as monthly longer pieces that engage the community and also promote thought leadership
* Manage a "metric driven" marketing function focused on cost of acquisition, lead nurturing, lead generation scoring, campaign effectiveness and community engagement
* Foster the Open Mile brand in people's mind that is authentic, unique, fun and engaging to our shippers and carriers unlike any other in transportation industry.
* Drive features to product team around acquisition, activation, retention, referral and monetization.
Competencies:
* Strategic thinker - We are breaking new frontiers in transportation you have to bring a strategic framework for developing marketing strategies to achieve our goals.
* Creativity - With so many acquisition channels to choose from, so much opportunity to engage which to choose, show a history of breaking through the clutter.
* Strong analytical skills to measure results as well as draw insightful conclusions.
* You've proven your chops in lead generation, brand building and developing communities.
* Flexible - Like any startup we will bob, weave, test/fail and marketing leader needs to drive this mindset and thrive in it.
* Player-coach but also a team player with a proven history of developing people underneath them
* Passion to build from the ground-up successful marketing function weather for the first time as a leader or to create another success for themselves.
* The person must be a strong cultural fit with the CEO and the early members of the organization. It's a culture that's hard driving, passionate, team oriented and ethical.
* This is a technology company and you are the marketing lead. Thus, you should be an adept user and leader in marketing tools and social media.
