Big
Data/Hadoop Primer- George Pace
===========================
Data,
data everywhere, but way too much to process. Today, businesses and IT
professionals are drowning in an ever growing stream of data, which has been
made more complicated by the fact that much of the data doesnot nicely
fit the structured world of relational databases. What can be done to handle
this data explosion and extract business value from it?
Big
Data technologies like Hadoop are being used to help process the massive amount
of data available and find value in them to help businesses. Mr. Pace's
presentation will be structured as a primer to Big Data - such as basic
concepts and functionality - and how it is being used to solve business
problems:
1.
The Starting Pace - what is Hadoop and why do you care
2.
The Learning Pace - the key things you need to know about Big Data and Hadoop
3.
The Current Pace - how Big Data/Hadoop is being used today
4.
How to Keep Pace - what you can do to get up to speed with Hadoop
THE
SPEAKER
=========
George
Pace has
over 32 years of IT experience spanning a wide range of disciplines and diverse
technologies. While he 'keeps pace' with many different technologies, he has a
particular interest in Social Networking (and the value it potentially provides
to both organizations and individuals) as well as Big Data and its organization
value. Mr. Pace holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Seton Hall
University and an MBA from the Rutgers School of Management.

COMMENTS
================
The
officers of the Chapter have elected to try out a new venue for this
month's meeting. The newly renovated Aliperti's Ristorante in
Clark offers us the opportunity to go to a buffet-style dinner meeting, which
will allow us to have an uninterrupted speaker's presentation following the
networking/meal component. The restaurant is also more centrally located and
easier to travel to for many of our members and friends who live and/or work in
central NJ. I am hoping that many of you who have hesitated to attend some of
our meetings in Roseland due to the travel distance, will take advantage of
this opportunity to join with us for a most interesting and informative evening
at Alperti's. As always, we will look forward to getting feedback from
you regarding the meeting site and format.
Repeating
my comment from last month, the Chapter officers have decided to propose
(target) topics for the rest of the year(see Future Meetings below) and are
encouraging our members and friends to suggest alternatives to that shown if they
feel it would improve the lineup. All suggestions will be given consideration
and changes could be made.
George
Pace last spoke to the Chapter in September2009 on the subject of Open Source.
I am sure some of you remember the quality of that presentation. Mr. Pace has
again gone to considerable lengths to provide our group with another enjoyable
and well-planned presentation on the subject of Big Data. I hope you will
attend the meeting to hear him, as well as take advantage of the networking opportunity
and buffet dinner. The Chapter needs your support.
