Flip your search script: Stop looking for a job - find a company that needs what
you have to offer

Lombard for NewsCareer coach Stanley Back (l.) advises Steven Kushnick on smart
job-search strategies.
Steven Kushnick knew when he took a temp assignment at the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security that it might not turn into a permanent job. But he'd been
unemployed for five months, so he decided to go for it.
Contractor CMI Management hired him to be an assistant at the agency's U.S.
Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Lower Manhattan.
Kushnick kept track of files filled with application papers for citizenship,
work visas and political asylum. They arrived, 12 boxes a day, with 50 files per
box, and were sent to an area called the control room.
"I was part of a big process of helping immigrants to become citizens," the
39-year-old Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, resident said proudly.
He worked there for only about a year. After the 2009 Fourth of July holiday, a
group of CMI temps were called to a meeting and told en masse their jobs were
eliminated.
"I went into panic mode," said Kushnick, who got no severance. "'I'm getting
laid off in the worst economy since the Great Depression. What do I do now?' was
all I could think of."
Kushnick still hasn't found another job and worries about becoming unable to pay
his co-op studio's mortgage.
He contacted the Daily News after seeing its Hire Me campaign; The News arranged
a free session for him with career coach Stanley Back, a former human resources
exec from Ditmas Park, Brooklyn.
"What if I told you, 'Stop looking for a job?' " Back asked at the beginning of
their sitdown.
The question provoked stunned silence.
"Look instead for the need," the career coach explained. "You need to find a
company that needs what you have to offer."
Kushnick should research specific employers, which can be "tedious," Back said,
and figure out how to explain what he's good at so they'll understand what he
can do for them.
A great place to do that research is the city's Science, Industry and Business
Library on E. 34th St. and Madison Ave. in midtown. He also should do
informational interviews with people in industries that interest him to find out
what goes on, day to day, in their workplaces. Back suggested he
read QuintCareers.com for techniques to use in the informational interviews.
He offered tips on networking in this environment, intended to enable Kushnick
to find people to help him.
"Let them know right away, 'I have no expectation that you have a job for me,'"
Back said. "When I'm networking, 'How can I help you?' is the first thing I
say."
Kushnick should write down stories for job interviews about solving problems at
past jobs, and practice telling them: "I am a believer in scripting," the career
coach said.
The stories should describe a problem, the action he took to fix it and the
result he got.
At Video Monitoring Services of America, where Kushnick worked for a decade
before his Homeland Security job, he was known as a problem-solver, he said.
"I was the point person if a salesperson had a problem," he said. "Or if someone
in shipping had a problem, they'd come to me. If someone in production had a
problem, they'd come to me."
At the Times Square business, which tracks media and advertising for clients and
has an archive of commercials dating back to the early days of TV, Kushnick was
promoted twice, ascending to a position known as a traffic coordinator. The
accounts he handled brought in revenues of about $1 million a year.
Whatever clients asked to have collected on DVDs — commercials they produced,
commercials their competitors ran, old commercials from the archives — he made
sure their orders were filled and arrived on time.
For example, a producer from Jimmy Kimmel's TV show called from Los Angeles one
afternoon. An ad from the VMS archives that was supposed to be played on that
night's show hadn't arrived.
"We had a digital delivery system," said Kushnick, who has a bachelor's degree
from Brooklyn College. "I found the commercial in 10 minutes and emailed it
right to him."
Some clients complained because TV commercials, radio spots and print
advertisements were delivered on separate DVDs. So Kushnick put all three onto a
single disc, and showed his co-workers how to do it, pleasing their customers.
But in January 2008, amid company cost-cutting, VMS laid off Kushnick and other
employees.
To boost his chances of landing a job since losing his temp position at Homeland
Security, Kushnick did certification training to become a pharmacy technician. A
relative helped him pay for the course. But he's worried he won't be able to
find a job even after he gets licensed.
At an unpaid internship at a Walgreens in Queens, he overheard a conference call
with a higher-up from corporate headquarters who phoned to say the pharmacy
technicians' hours were being cut in half.
Kushnick thought there'd be job growth in a health care-related field. But he
didn't do research by talking to pharmacists before getting training.
"You did it 'bass-ackward,' " the career coach told him. "But if you go for a
wrong industry, you can recover. You can't beat yourself up."
