Career Tips: Critical Career Search Concepts

Posted by: "JohnH" John@JHACareers.com   johnwesthadley

Thu Jun 2, 2011 3:52 am (PDT)

A couple of months ago, I made a presentation to a group of financial
executives, in which I presented a set of key concepts for accelerating
a job search.

In my most recent issue of Career Tips, I did a deep dive into Critical
Concept #1, Show Your Energy.

Nothing kills a search (or a career) more than a lack of passion. This
is true at every stage, from the initial tentative conversations with
potential networking contacts, to the very end of the interview process
and salary negotiation.

I should expect you to be much more excited than I am about your target,
and about you as an outstanding candidate, at least until I get to know
you. So what does it mean if you walk into a situation appearing
unenthusiastic, bored, depressed, or lacking confidence in your ability
to do the job?

I don't mean that you need to jump up and down telling me that you are
the best thing since sliced bread. And you don't have to tell me that
the job I have to offer is the most perfect job for you,and has been
your dream job since you were twelve.

I do mean that you have to show true engagement and interest. You have
to seem like the target you are shooting for is one you really want.
You have to have shown enough interest to have done substantial research
into the sector, industry, particular companies, and especially the key
challenges someone in that job would face. And when you come in for the
interview, you darn well better be able to demonstrate your passion
through all of the things you have learned ahead of time about my
company and the open position!

If you would like the complete article, just drop me a note at
