*Find out how to conquer this common initial screening tool.*

It's common practice for companies to narrow down their search for a new
employee by interviewing candidates over the phone. There are many
similarities to the in-person interview like preparing ahead of time and
speaking professionally and clearly. However, there are a few points unique
to the phone interview--and following them could mean the difference between
a job offer and heading back to the employment drawing board.

*1. Background Noise
*Make sure the only thing the interviewer can hear is the sound of your
extra-professional voice. This means choosing a location that is
quiet--notably one free of traffic noise, screaming children, TV background
sound and anything else that would be distracting. Also, make sure you
aren't wearing earrings that might knock against the phone or jingle near
it.

Make sure you don't chew gum, smoke or eat during the conversation. If you
are worried about having a dry mouth, keep a glass of water handy but make
sure you only drink if necessary and at opportune moments.

*2. Know The Company
*Whether the interview is in-person or over the phone, it pays to do your
research about your potential employer. Knowing about the company will not
only help you to ask more informed questions, it will help you tailor your
responses to highlight the most appropriate characteristics for the job.

At the very least, be sure to check out the company's website and get a good
sense of what they do, who works for them and their position in their field.
You should also be familiar with the job description and any requirements
the job posting mentioned. Be ready to demonstrate how well you fill those
requirements with specific examples.

*3. Have Your Résumé On-Hand
*While you probably know your own work history pretty well, having your
résumé in front of you will ensure you get the dates and any contact names
that may come up. It will also come in handy if you get nervous--having your
résumé handy will help keep your nerves steady, or at least provide a back
up if you forget some of the details.

Although you've likely already done so if you have been applying to jobs,
make sure your résumé is up to date and includes all relevant information
for your previous jobs, education and references.

*4. Prepare Notes
*Each interview will no doubt have a unique set of questions. However, you
can be pretty certain some standard questions will show up in some form.
Prepare your answers ahead of time and you'll be able to give them some
thought. Consider the following questions:

What do you consider your greatest strength?
What do you consider your greatest weakness?
What specific examples demonstrate your ability to handle this job?
Describe a situation where you solved a problem with a coworker or client.
------------------------------

*5. Breathe
*Since the only interaction you have with your interviewer at this stage is
through your voice, make sure you speak clearly, slowly (but not too slow!)
and professionally. You (and your voice) should be engaged and enthusiastic.
Don't feel like you have to fill every silence--take a moment to gather your
thoughts after you are asked a question to make sure your answer is the best
one you can possibly give.

*The Bottom Line
*Interviews can be stressful, but taking a few simple steps to prepare
yourself will help you stay relaxed and confident. Put yourself in a
comfortable environment--and remember, while dressing up may help get you
into the job-seeking mood, your prospective employer will never know if you
are curled up on the couch in your Snuggie.

Greetings Jayne L.!
*ANNOUNCEMENTS *
* *

- *I'LL BE IN THE NEW YORK (city) DAILY NEWS: *One of the reporters is
doing a series where job coaches help job seekers. The Daily News has
invited anyone who lives in the five boroughs, wants help, and is willing to
have their story public to send in their resume. Those selected are paired
one:one for an afternoon of coaching. I'm not scheduled yet - it will
probably be sometime in September.

- *CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! HAPPY DANCES ALL AROUND!!!! *
- *To Steve P. in VA,* a retained client who found himself employed
after just six weeks working with me. He started his new job as a VP
Operations, Tuesday, July 27.
- *To Kimberlyne B. in PA*, who took the first class session, and
having left her favorite job as a buyer for multiple companies, including
QVC, was working at a bank for a year, and has just landed a
buyer position
for a major retail company
- *To Chris T. in CT*, who also took the first class and after having
had no interviews for months, just had his second interview for
an Account
Manager position with the President of a printing company, and I'm quite
sure will be employed by the end of this week.
- *To Jane T. in CT*, also a class "graduate," who had an interview
yesterday with a company slightly outside her area of expertise but in an
area she wants to get into, and who completely impressed the interviewer
with why she'd be such as asset to the company. We're expecting a second
interview.
- *To Patty C. in PA*, who in doing one of the class assignments,
stumbled onto a position just perfect for her. She excels in a
University
setting and has supported oncology research. After I send this out, I'm
emailing her to find out how it went!

- *HOW TO LAND A JOB IN 8 - 12 WEEKS**: *Second session begins

teleseminar and email - so you can live anywhere. The first session filled
up in 4 days. It's a 6-week, intense and detailed, interactive class where
every week, I'm going over your work, sending it back for editing and
changes, and reviewing it until it's up to par. Hurry! Only a few spots

*Judi provides a unique perspective on job seeking. Her advice
incorporates the possible viewpoints of employers/HR departments as well as
the job seeker's personal and professional goals. Most career coaches have
a canned approach and try to fit any client into that formula without
actually listening to determine each person's unique situation. Judi
doesn't do that. Also her fees are very reasonable in this difficult
economy and one can purchase several services as needed. *---Pauline S.

*IN THIS ISSUE:*

These questions frequently get overlooked. People don't think of asking
them. Or they think the questions are too forward. Or they're waiting til
the end of the interview and then - gasp! - there's no time to ask
questions!

An interview is a two-way street. As I said to candidates when I was a
recruiter, "You're getting married after two dates; you better find out how
many kids they want up front."

*Part 2 of a 2-part series* - Special Bonus Issue last week - three weeks in
a row for the newsletter! As I said last week....Why? Why not?

*Feature Article ** *

*SIX QUESTIONS TO ALWAYS ASK THE HIRING AUTHORITY
part 2*

In the last issue I shared the importance of understanding that an
interview is a two-way street. It's as important for you to ensure the
company meets your needs as it is for the company to know if you meet
theirs.

Far too many job seekers don't realize they're stepping into a black hole
until they've already started to fall. The result of this is usually
staying, because it's easier than having to go through the whole job finding
process again (after all, at least it's something). Additionally, the voice
of eternal rationalization steps in. "I just started, so I might as well
stay. Maybe it will get better." But it never does.

Asking the six questions in this week's and the previous week's column are
critical in helping you to determine if the company with which you're
interviewing is the kind of place you want to be….or not, while you still
have time to make a choice. Here are the final three questions.

- *WHAT TYPES OF PEOPLE TEND TO EXCEL HERE?:* Workaholics? Ones who are
self-motivated and manage themselves well? People who work well in teams or
committees?

This tells you about the pervasive culture in the company or department.
Generally speaking, companies - or departments - tend to be made up of
similar types of people that are in harmony with the company culture and
philosophy.

An entrepreneurial person may not function well in a team
environment. People who are accustomed to thinking for themselves will find
themselves chafing in a company that has a more dictatorial style. Those who
perform better when they're told what to do will be adrift in a company that
requires its employees to think for themselves.
- *WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL EMPLOYEE FOR THIS POSITION? *The purpose of this
question isn't for you to measure if they like you. The purpose is for you
to see how closely you match what they want, and to use that as a gauge of
how realistic it is for you to continue pursuing the job, even if the other
answers appear both positive and promising.

If you hear aspects of yourself that you haven't touched on, this is the
perfect opportunity to provide examples and underline why, based on what the
interviewer just said, you are that ideal employee.

On the other hand, the company has no reason to lie to you. If you hear a
few traits mentioned that don't resonate with you, there's no need to blurt
that out or try to overcome it. But if you find yourself shrinking, don't
try to quiet the voice of unease and doubt. Recognize it for what it is – a
sign you should leave this opportunity to someone else – and when the
interview is done, politely remove yourself from consideration.
- *HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN HERE? WHY DO YOU STAY?:* The answer will give
you an indication as to the health of the department or company. It will
also give you additional insight into your potential boss, his management
style, and what type of people excel there.

As I mentioned in part one, these are informational questions, not
challenges. Be genuinely interested in the answer, because you're gaining
valuable information that has to do with your future. Match what you've
learned with what you are looking for, which helps stave off desperation.

Because when you need a job….any job….you become immune to inconsistencies
in information and internal warning signs such as lack of enthusiasm, knots
or flutters in your stomach, or false assurance. Your perfect job might
land in your lap by grace and good fortune. But more likely, you'll need to
look for it. It's there - but to recognize it, you'll need to know what it *
doesn't* look like, as well as what it *does*.

* DEFINE YOUR PROBLEM - GET GUIDANCE*
*RISK FREE! *
Your service is very useful. Another problem is that one is restricted from
talking to ones colleagues about their career moves and sometimes when one
they know anything either. Forget about friends-they're even more clueless.
Anyway talking to you is like going to a therapist for ones career.
*---Elizabeth M., NY*

After speaking with me for a time you were able to get through the clutter
and focus on the likelihood that I was not chosen for a job after an
interview because I failed to show true interest in the company and
position. My heart wasn't really in it. I just wanted a job. So instead of
continuing on the same track you recommended really thinking about what I
wanted in a position and only applying to those. Many instead suggest
sending out four million resumes, etc. Instead you simplified the process
by helping me to focus on what I wanted and where I would be happy. Thanks
to you, I'm now in a job I love.

------------------------------
*Quick Tip*

*WHO'S THE COMPANY? *

The majority of job seekers neglect to describe their employers. Even
professional résumé writers often fail to provide company descriptions in
rewrites for their clients. And the only thing this accomplishes is to leave
the interviewer with a big question mark about the context of your skills If
you are working in a highly specialized, niche industry, perhaps each
company knows the others.

If you're searching locally, a prospective employer may be aware of the
company you are leaving. But don't assume so. Your objective is to give an
idea of the size of the company, what it does, and who its market is so that
the hiring company can place your experience in relation to what they are
looking for.

*JOB INTERVIEW HORROR STORIES
(monster.com)*

- I was interviewing a candidate for a mortgage sales position. She was
dressed very professionally and had about a year and a half of experience.
The interview was going very well for about 20 minutes when her cellphone
started ringing. Instead of shutting it off, she answered it and began to
talk (to her boyfriend) for approximately one minute. I was astonished and
told her that the interview was over. She didn't know why I canceled the
interview. All the better!

- I asked a candidate why she was leaving her current job. She proceeded
to rake her boss over the coals for the next 10 minutes. Then she told me
his name! I have been playing golf with this guy at my golf course for the
last 12 years. I only know him from golf, and he seems like a very nice guy
who treats everyone with respect. When I told her that I knew him, the blood
drained from her face. It is a very small world. I did not hire her.

- We are a small sporting-goods distributor, and we recently received an
application from a gentleman trying to impress us with his dedication to the
"field." His stated goal? "To ski 365 days-a-year." Wonder when he was
planning to work

*Are You Sending Out Resume After Resume but Nothing is Happening?*

If you aren't getting responses to your resume – there's a problem with it.
If the hiring authority has to figure too much out, or your resume raises
more questions than it answers, you're tossed into the trash.

It's that simple. Here are just a few examples of what can be messed up:

- it doesn't sell you
- it's full of bland responsibility statements
- the layout isn't clear or the fonts don't differentiate enough
- it's confusing
- takes too much time to pick out what's what
- there's too much text squashed together
- it's generic and full of job-speak
- your objective is too brief and doesn't work to your advantage
- you need a profile or a summary
- you've unknowingly got disqualifying phrases placed in there and
they're causing you to be screened out

If the hiring authority has to figure too much out, or your resume raises
more questions than it answers, you're tossed into the trash - finished
before you even began.

Since I only do resumes for retained clients, I'm going to refer you to two
others, both of who are superb. Anything else you need -consultations,
