POSITION: Technical Writer
REPORTS TO: Associate Director of Technical Production
DEPARTMENT: Time Inc. Information Technology
BASIC FUNCTION:
The Technical Writer coordinates with team members to write, edit, and manage the team's documentation and knowledge base. This roll works closely with technical leads and template architects in authoring documentation and facilitating document management through the project Wiki.
The Technical Writer must be able to write and communicate clearly, and to understand and interpret highly technical concepts. The position requires attention to detail in accuracy, format, and usability, as well as adherence to Time Inc. style guidelines and familiarity with all aspects of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) process.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Technical Writer has one or more of the following responsibilities:
Documentation
Familiarity with generally accepted principles in technical documentation
Ability to strengthen knowledge base by presenting documentation in appropriate formats
Effectively interview key Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and other knowledge contributors to develop documentation
Conduct research necessary to produce accurate, comprehensive documents
Assist in building documentation infrastructure per project as well as for overarching, cross-project team concepts
Edit shared documentation and provide peer review as needed
Format documentation for collaborative Wiki environment
Create and format graphics for knowledge share
Create and format information and data flow diagrams
Create, format, and/or edit presentation materials
Other
Review functional and technical specifications for completeness and accuracy
Provide level of effort estimates to team leads
Assist as needed in SDLC support efforts, such as informal quality assurance testing
Assist in training efforts as needed
Assist in API knowledge share
Methodology
Adhere and contribute to standards and guidelines as set by Time Inc.
Research and analyze technology in both stand-alone and integrated context
Analyze and implement process improvements for document sharing
Analyze subject matter and audience, and adjust documentation tone and technical scope accordingly
Adhere to common publishing guidelines with respect to distribution and document version control
JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
Excellent writing, communication, and organization skills
Ability to identify complex information needs of target audiences
Develop and manage documentation plans
Ability to use and author documentation in Wikis
Communicate technical solutions to non-technical audience
Base familiarity of front-end development technologies including HTML/XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, JSON, and DOM Scripting
Solid understanding of web best practices and web standards
Sensitivity to general Internet site goals such as performance optimization and search engine optimization
Expert in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Visio
Experience with WYSIWYG HTML authoring tool such as Dreamweaver
Experience with imaging software and screen capture utilities
Experience with knowledge management systems
Familiarity with multiple browsers and platforms
Familiarity with broad principles of Web 2.0 and Semantic Web
Proficiency in technical and process problem-solving, as well as root analysis
General knowledge of principles of technical design and workflow of SDLC
Work with limited supervision
Education:
BA/BS degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field
Work Experience:
3+ years work experience as a technical writer
2+ years working in a software development environment
