Jobseekers--Break out of the rut of networking ONLY with other jobse

The #1 problem I see in this market is the difficulty jobseekers have meeting people who are currently employed.
It's easy to find groups of others in transition, but how do you break into a group of people who are currently employed or have their own businesses? And remember, you're not expecting that they could help, but you want to build relationships that ideally can connect you to others in their network.
AND they've got to "get" the concept of networking.
Check out this event--Social Media Outbreak. http://www.socialmediaoutbreak. on Thursday, November 19th from 5 to 8 PM at BUtterfield8 in downtown Stamford.com
I'm teaming up with a PR professional to host this event, so he's delivering the business contacts, and I'm encouraging jobseekers to check it out. Last month's event (our FIRST) brought in 40 people, (psst...only 3 were jobseekers, so you're not competing for contacts).
What's the hook? People who sign up then invite their friends, who invite their friends..so it's like 6 degrees of separation. The bonus? You walk into a room where you know at least 2 other people you invited. Last month's event was great to see who was connected to whom! It brings all of these LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter connections to life!
Ticket price--if you register by end of day Nov. 9th = $20. After the 9th, it goes up to $25.
I am looking for 1 volunteer who will receive free admission to run the check-in table that evening--you get to meet everyone as they come in and follow up with them later in the evening. Email me directly if you are interested.
Here's what you get for the ticket price:
1. Your first drink
2. $25 Gift Certificate to BUtterfield 8
3. Special Surprise (last month we included a wine tasting)
4. AND--social media contact information when you walk in the door for all attendees, so you know who you want to meet and can follow up with them afterwards.
AND:
A free lunch sandwich or salad if you do your part. If you put the "giving" into the holidays, we will say "Thanks" with a free sandwich or salad at B8. Just bring two canned goods (and please don't just dump the waxed beans in the back of pantry, ok?) that we will donate to the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, and you'll get your freebie.
Check it out today! http://www.socialmediaoutbreak. com

You need an alternative plan to your networking event

Folks,
I agree with Melanie's last note that there is a fatal flaw with our networking groups, the one issue that we will never be able to overcome. First and foremost I think that we should all be very proud of the effort that we are doing to set up these events and participate in them. However there is a basic flaw with networking groups. No matter how hard we try, the best that you will be able to do at these events is to talk to a fellow networker(s) who are out of work. We try to get behind the gatekeepers but hardly ever get to talk to a company representative.
That is why I feel so strongly that you contact a chamber of commerce in your area and get them to support a program that we started here up in Dutchess County. Regardless if you join the Work Local First Program(WLF) or you get your local chamber to support this initiative, by joining a chamber as a non business member you get to talk directly with business leaders who have the next level of contacts that may help you out.
I will be happy to talk to anyone interested in joining the WLF program or how you may be able to reach out to your chamber of commerce and set a similar program up.
Regards,
Rob

Here are some thoughts from an economist associate of mine.
Not a pretty picture, but there are granules of hope.
Only the best,
Ron

Job Landing
Posted by: "Frank Bastone" fbast23@yahoo.com fbast23

To my fellow networkers,
I am happy to report that I just landed an Application Development Manager position with Aetna in Hartford.
FYI, this job posting was on Indeed.com which was linked to insurancejobs.com.
I consider myself fortunate given the low percentage(5-7%) of converting an on line job
posting into a job landing.
The valuable advice from the career experts including Ron Drew to customize your
cover letter and resume for each job posting, was instrumental in getting my phone
and in-person interviews. Once you're in the door, you then have the opportunity to
convince the hiring manager and staff that you are a great fit for the position.
I wish you all the best of luck and success in your job search.
Be persistent, proactive and persuasive.
Thanks.
Frank Bastone
