Voice Your Opinion Help Pass The Federal UI Extension

PassHR5618
Federal UI extensions have lapsed since the beginning of June. Although the House has reauthorized funding for the Emergency Unemployment Compensation and Extended Benefits program, the Senate failed to do so prior to going on their July 4th recess. Congress is now back in session, and it's imperative that the extensions are reauthorized immediately we need to urge Congress to pass H.R.5618, the Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act, which will restore EUC and EB benefits until November 2010.

Subject: [WNO] It Appears as if someone else is following our lead
Following on the heels of our decision to leave Chappaqua for a time during the summer months, it now appears as though someone else may be following our lead. What can we say, save that they follow on the heels of greatness?

Could Be Time for Clintons to Trade Up
By PETER APPLEBOME
CHAPPAQUA, N.Y.
Serious and casual Clinton watchers may be focused on Chelsea Clinton's wedding on July 31. But for their neighbors here, the more pressing question is a familiar one for suburban empty nesters: What's up with the house?
Say what you will about the Clintons. After the initial skepticism about carpetbaggers or opportunists, they've actually morphed into fairly typical Westchester folks, stressed out over work, contemplating momentous life passages, and, of course, trying to figure out what to do with the house in this real estate market.
It remains to be seen whether published reports are true about the Clintons' decamping for pricier Bedford, and a horsey 20-acre estate nine miles away in Bedford Hills called Clover Hill Farm, listed at $10.9 million. No sale has closed, and in this glutted market, full of attractive houses and desperate sellers, any potential deal can fall through. The listing agent, Mady Wengrover, declined to comment.
Still, there have been reports from many locales in Westchester and points north for well over a year about the Clintons' kicking the tires of houses in places like Bedford and Armonk, and as far away as Woodstock. So it's pretty clear that 11 years after the initial frenzy about just where the Clintons would land, Version 2.0 is under way.
This time around figures to be a bit more sedate. After all, if they move, they're only leaving the Dutch Colonial at 15 Old House Lane in Chappaqua, not the White House. There's no issue, like leaving office, to force a decision.
Still, locally it's cause for reflection. One Chappaqua resident, the lawyer, author and former Congressional candidate Lawrence Otis Graham, fearing Chappaqua was about to be LeBron James'd, in an essay on The Daily Beast Web site, has already called on the Clintons to stay put.
In his view, the Clintons brought "celebrity, pride and gravitas" to what was just another Westchester suburb full of people much too obsessed about what college their children got into, and gave it enough name recognition that people finally realized it wasn't the place where Teddy Kennedy drove off that bridge. And Chappaqua offered the Clintons the perfect place for Hillary Clinton to begin a successful Senate campaign despite having no previous ties to New York State.
The Clintons, it turns out, are almost unanimously viewed as great neighbors. Mr. Clinton has been far more conspicuous in town, but they march in the Memorial Day Parade, get egg sandwiches at Lange's Little Store and Deli, and, until recently, were regularly seen at Starbucks or local restaurants, at the nearby movie theaters in Mount Kisco or Pleasantville, walking the dog or using the track at Greeley High School.
Roni Jacobson, a lawyer who lives on their street, said the Clintons are regulars at her Memorial Day barbecue and faithfully attended a neighbor's Super Bowl party until he moved away. "They've been really great, caring neighbors," Mrs. Jacobson said. "I'd really be sad to see them go."
STILL, they've hardly been around since Mrs. Clinton became secretary of state. That colonial on a suburban cul-de-sac and the Chappaqua address - read: suburbanites just like you! - no longer matter much politically. Bedford, home of huge secluded estates and horse farms for the likes of Martha Stewart, Richard Gere, Glenn Close and others, offers more space and privacy if they're contemplating their own Kennebunkport, Hyannisport or even Crawford, Tex. And, if it matters, the hamlet of Bedford Hills, which includes the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women, is viewed as a little less upscale than neighboring Bedford Village.
Should the Clintons leave, they'll be missed, but Mr. Graham notwithstanding, few people will begrudge them that fancy new house and next life. This is Chappaqua. People move here for something, usually the schools, and they leave when that no longer works. If the Clintons can upsize while everyone else is downsizing, and sell the house with its presidential imprimatur in this dead market, most people figure, more power to them.

Perhaps we may be able to use their former home for a while as a meeting place.
