Networking & The body language that says "don't hire me"

I found two interesting items in the Smartbrief below on networking and Body
Language.

Getting Ahead

* Study: Good-looking women may not always have job advantage
While attractive women can often earn more money and get more promotions, they
may fall short when they apply for jobs considered "masculine," such as director
of finance, according to a study by the University of Colorado-Denver Business
School. "In every other kind of job, attractive women were preferred," a
researcher said in a statement. Good-looking men were found to have an advantage
over less attractive males, no matter the job, the study found. American City
Business Journals/Denver/The Denver Blogs(8/8)

Making the Connection

* Networking isn't just about the here and now
When you connect with someone via social media, don't just think about adding
another person to your network; rather, consider how you'll continue to link to
this person and how you'll be helping him or her a couple of years from now,
Brent Peterson writes. If you're not ready to deepen your contacts, "you may
find yourself alone" when you need help years from now, he writes.
CareerRocketeer.com(8/8)

Your Next Challenge

* Survey: The body language that says "don't hire me"
For about 67% of managers, a job candidate not making eye contact is a deal
breaker, according to a CareerBuilder survey. Other body language no-no's
include playing with your hair, slumping, fidgeting and crossing your hands over
your chest, employers say. Forbes(8/5)

* Don't be embarrassed about your work history
Don't fret about having a number of temporary jobs or positions below your
ability listed on your résumé, especially in this tough job market, Suzanne
Lucas writes. "I find that busy is better than bored and people respect people
who are working, no matter the work (I would list unpaid volunteer work as
well)," she writes. BNET/Evil HR Lady blog(8/5)

* This boss wants to hear about what gets on your last nerve
Sheila Lirio Marcelo, founder and CEO of Care.com, says she often asks job
candidates to talk about their pet peeves. "I can say 'What motivates you?' but
the reason I ask for pet peeves is often the opposite. What de-motivates them?
What bothers them, to get a sense of how they think," she says. The New York
Times (free registration)(8/7)
