With the number of unemployed Americans now in the millions, finding a job
can be a daunting task. Job seekers have to make themselves stand out in a
crowd of possibly thousands of applicants just to get an interview. Then,
when the seemingly impossible interview date has come, the applicant has
another set of tough questions to answer.

One of the hardest things that applicants have to explain is the dreaded
employment gap. Many employers want to know just what you've been doing
between jobs and the answer to this question can make or break an interview.
Here are some ideas that I have either used myself or seen used when hiring
employees that are very effective.

Write Off Your Job Hunt!

By LAURA SAUNDERS
<http://online.wsj.com/search/term.html?KEYWORDS=LAURA+SAUNDERS&bylinesearch
=true>

It's no secret that millions of Americans are looking for work, from recent
graduates to downsized late-career employees who aren't ready to retire.

Far fewer are aware of how Uncle Sam's tax code can be used to blunt the
cost of a job search-especially one that may go on for longer than in the
past.

Judi Lacko, a 45-year-old CPA from Denver who has been actively searching
for work as a chief accounting officer for months, says, "Looking back, I
wish I had thought right away about deductions and record-keeping."

Better Ideas Through Failure

Companies Reward Employee Mistakes to Spur Innovation, Get Back Their Edge

. By SUE SHELLENBARGER

To pitch a prospective client for her ad agency, Amanda Zolten knew she a
had to take a risk. But the client's product-kitty litter-posed a unique
challenge.

Lucy Belle, Ms. Zolten's cat, furnished the answer.

Before she and her team met with six of the company's executives, Ms. Zolten
buried Lucy Belle's mess in a box of the company's litter and pushed it
under the conference-room table. No one noticed until Ms. Zolten pointed it
out-and the fact that no one had smelled it.

Shocked, several executives pushed back from the table. Two left the room.

Are Headhunters Calling You, Or Ignoring You?

Ex-Recruiter Reveals Secrets to Gaining Headhunter's Attention

In my former life as a recruiter (also affectionately referred to as
"headhunter"), I received hundreds of resumes a week from all parts of the
country. The statement that a person's resume gets a 15-second read is not
far from the truth. In fact, 15 seconds is a generous assumption. In
reality, a resume must capture the recruiter's attention in the first five
seconds to avoid the round file. Candidates can greatly improve their chance
of catching the recruiter's attention by following three simple rules:

Paralegals and legal assistants make an average annual income of $47,000,
and over the past three years the average unemployment rate in the field has
been just 3.1%. The job is also relatively low-stress, involves little
contact with the public, and doesn't require employees to breathe in toxic
fumes or lift loads of 50 lbs. or more. Those factors land paralegal in the
number one spot on CareerCast.com <http://www.careercast.com/> 's new list
of most underrated jobs. Second on the list: accountant, with an average
income of $60,000 and an average three-year unemployment rate of 4.8%. Loan
officer ranks third, with income of $55,000 and a three-year unemployment
rate of 4.4%.
