Is a Job Search Fair?
Upcoming Events in NJ
Dear Career Tips (Recovering From a Low Ball Offer)
Dear Robert,
I asked a large group last week if it was fair that many hiring managers might screen you out just because you had one spelling error on your résumé. It was to some degree a trick question, but there was someone in the front row who took strong exception to that position. This got me thinking about a core psychology that holds many job seekers back - discussed in my lead article.
I have 2 in person events coming up in NJ this week, and another next week, described below. If you're in the area, I hope to see you at one.
As always, write to me for advice on your biggest frustrations with your Career Search, or the greatest roadblocks to your Career Growth, at Advice@JHACareers.com . ~~~~~~~~~~
Is a Job Search Fair?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~
I was speaking to a large job search group last week about how to create a killer résumé, and put up this slide:
"Is it fair that hiring managers may discard a résumé with a single spelling error?"
While many in the audience immediately said "Yes", One person in the front row began vigorously shaking her head. As I went on, she continued to object to the fact that she might be ruled out because of minor spelling or grammar mistakes. After all, no one's perfect. Why won't hiring managers accept that we are all human, and sometimes make mistakes?
There are a number of answers to that, but in the end it comes down to this:
Fair is irrelevant. This is your search, and if you want to land, you need to focus on what works, and not get bogged down worrying about what is fair.
When I started my practice 9 years ago, I offered free résumé assessments to my alumni group. I developed a scoring rubric, and gave every person a detailed report on how I rated their résumé (from Poor to Excellent) and why. When I did the follow up call with one person, he started objecting to one area in which I reduced his scores because he had used 8 point font. His reaction:
"Why should I concern myself with an employer who is so shortsighted that he would rule me out because I used too small a font?"
What that told me was that he had a much bigger problem than the size of his font - he really had an attitude issue.
Now I'll be the first to admit that many things about your search aren't fair:
* It isn't fair that you worked for 20 years doing great work in your chosen field and now find yourself on the streets struggling to find your next job.
* It isn't fair that you send out tons of résumés and generally don't even get an acknowledgement.
* It isn't fair that you go to an interview for a job that seems to be a perfect fit, don't get the offer, and don't get any feedback on why you weren't hired.
* It isn't fair that you have to worry about how you are going to fund your retirement (or even your living expenses) if you are out of work for several more months.
But here's the thing:
The more you think, talk or react to how unfair things are, the less likely it is that you will land anytime soon. You need to be focused on what you can do, what you will do, what you want to do, and go after your target like a pit bull. Any energy devoted to worrying about what's fair is just a distraction that will get in your way.
When you really feel a need to vent, have a small cadre of colleagues with whom you can do that. (For how to do this without bringing your search crashing down around you, see my article, Don't Vent In Public.) And the rest of the time, work to figure out what you CAN do that will actually more your search forward.
So check that baggage at the door and focus on what you really need to do to land the job and pay you deserve! And if you are still struggling, maybe we should talk. I have very little time for additional clients, so you need to be very serious about exploring working together, but if you are, here's how to do that:
1. Complete my Career Search Assessment survey at www.TinyURL.com/CareerSearch 2011
2. I'll reach out with times to have a 20 minute debrief to explore your challenges, and how I could help you with those.
3. Come prepared with any questions you would need answered to help you make an informed decision.
4. If there's a fit, I'll explain exactly how I work with people, and what it costs.
There's no cost or obligation, just a conversation that will give you value. But you have to come ready to seriously explore whether working together makes sense.
Dear Career Tips (Recovering From a Low Ball Offer) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~
How do I handle a situation in which I've already given a recruiter my expected salary, but once I specifically found out the working conditions (after the 2nd interview with the recruiter) I realized I may have low-balled myself? If you haven't gotten an offer on paper yet should you wait to see what the recruiter presents and then counter offer? Please advise.
BTW, the 2nd interview went extremely well and the client was anxious in informing me I was hired. Can I use that to my advantage?How To Recover
Dear Recover: Hopefully when you talked to the recruiter, you gave a broad range, rather than a specific number. (You should always talk in terms of a range, so you have room for discussion.)
Is this an internal or external recruiter?
When you say the "working conditions", what do you mean? The justification for a higher salary (at the company's end) should be that the expectations of what you are going to produce (results) are higher, and therefore the job is worth more money. Your discussion needs to be focused on that.
What does the market suggest is the general salary range for this job in your area?
Make sure you've done your research on that, so that you are armed with that information when you approach them. I presume the range is higher than the range you told them, now that you know more about the details of the job?
If it's an external recruiter, then by all means level with him. Let him know that now that you've discussed the job, you've realized that the demands of the job require a higher salary than what you originally thought. Talk about the results you would anticipate being able to bring to the job.
If it's an internal recruiter, it's a bit trickier. You have two choices:
1) Talk about what makes the job exciting, and the results you anticipate being able to produce. Then indicate that based on what you now know about the job, it appears to be a higher level than you anticipated, and that therefore the salary you had spoken about is light. (You will need to be prepared to give a new range. You can also bring in the information you have from your market research of what jobs like that are valued at in the market, now that you know more about it.)
2) Wait until you get the offer and then do that.
I guess I'd be inclined to go with #1 - you don't want them spending a lot of time getting used to the lower salary number, only to find that you aren't willing to take something that low.
Recovery's Response:
Thanks so much for your response. I am working with an external recruiter and this is one of their biggest clients. They have placed many people at this company.
When I first began my discussions with the recruiter I was unemployed. The thought of even interviewing for this position seemed to be a long shot the way my luck had been going. After I gave her (the recruiter) a figure, she gave me the range. I was within range, but at the lower end of the scale. This was done before I even had my first interview.
Because I didn't have experience in this industry, I thought I would be comfortable accepting this salary. However, after speaking with some current employees who work for the company and after the second interview, I understand that the job might be more demanding than I anticipated. I also searched salary info for the specific position and now I see that the national average may be about 8K-10K less than what I said I was comfortable with accepting. I know I have the perfect background and natural talent to excel in this position and apparently the client saw it too, which is why they made their decision so quickly. I will use your advice, and also try to initiate the conversation on salary before the recruiter draws up the paperwork/offer letter.
And Immediately After:
Well I've been given an offer letter, which of course included the salary I stated originally. Is it appropriate to submit a counter offer at this time? I still think I have some time.
My Final Word:
It's not too late to do so, but you have to do it by phone. I would start with the external recruiter and explain the situation, and then see what he/she suggests as to how to do it. Perhaps he/she will intervene.
The Rest of the Story:
Thanks so much for checking back with me. I was able to add about $5,000 onto my salary. I used the information gained in the face to face interview as leverage. I originally asked for $10,000 more, but the recruiter met me halfway and I was satisfied. In the future I plan to research the job title and industry rate before I speak with the recruiter directly, that way I won't feel pressured to throw out a number before I have all the information.
Thanks for your help.
Feel free to submit your own questions about issues you face in your search or your career, and I'll address them in a future issue (keeping you anonymous, of course, unless you specifically tell me to do otherwise).
