Video Resume

I have been contemplating putting together a video resume, a short promo that hopefully will entice an employer to take a look at my "real" resume online.
I was wondering what everyone thinks about this idea, especially those in Human Resources.

Three thoughts:
1. It is good that you reach out to leverage your networking group (CNG
in this case) to ask job-search pertinent questions. The CNG Yahoo Group
consists of just about 1000 members and among those I am sure there are
people who can provide you some input.
2. It is not good that you did not identify yourself by name. People
will be more reluctant responding to an unknown email address.
3. Video resumes are an up and coming phenomenon. People use it more
and more (not sure with what degree of success?). In any case the caveat
here is that it better be excellent! Otherwise your good intentions will
backfire. I am somewhat experienced with this and can tell you that and
amateur made video resume would not serve you well. A professionally made
one could potentially be a good thing. Be prepared to spend some money.

I'm no expert but .
1. I've heard it claimed that some companies are so concerned about
discrimination rules that they won't consider someone's resume after they've
already seen the person's sex, race/ethnicity, and apparent age.
2. Generally, I don't think a video commercial will entice anyone to read
your resume. It is much more likely to work the other way around. It takes
a recruiter 0 seconds to screen out resumes by using key word searches on
their inbox of resumes, 10 seconds to visually screen a resume, and 30
seconds for a more careful screening. All of those take much less time than
any video commercial you might offer, and a recruiter's time is scarce.
3. The exception would be a place like LinkedIn or Facebook or your own
personal web page or on an online forum where you are already known for your
contributions to the subject matter. By the time a recruiter or a
networking contact visits your info there, they may actually want or at
least be willing to find out more about you.
4. If you aren't reasonably photogenic & charismatic on video, or appear to
have any attributes that they might discriminate against, it could be risky.

Clearly, I am not an expert on this topic but that has never stopped me from
having an opinion. A video resume´ that includes your elevator speech along
with your educational background and professional development may catch the
attention of some HR professionals if you can send an email directly to
them. It might give you a leg up since this is somewhat of an uncommon
marketing strategy, or it could work against you if, for whatever reason,
the recipients do not like your face, your accent, your suit, etc. I
suspect that it would be a wasted effort for any company that strictly uses
key words to identify potential candidates from posted resumes´. I have
shied away from posting my photograph on LinkedIn because of some of these
concerns. However, I am seriously considering posting a photo now for the
convenience of other people with whom I am networking.
