Job Title: HP Unix Administrator

Configures and installs computer hardware and system software.
Troubleshoots and resolves problems and outages.
Manages backup and recovery of servers and data, manage tape libraries, establish and manage off site data storage; determines appropriate backup retention periods. (it's imperative that the new admin learns how to use Data Protector...it's not rocket science but it's definitely a function that will be off loaded to the new person)
Assists in resolution of hardware/software platform problems in complex, multi-layered environment.
Analyzes impact of software changes across other functional units.
Assigns system logon passwords, perform password resets, add new users and revoke inactive accounts.
Maintains system logs and system software installation media.
Provides system to backup and recover servers, manage tape libraries, establish and manage off site data storage, determine appropriate backup retention periods. (in the near future there will be a need to migrate the current Data Protector (backup server) to a new HP-UX server installed. They will need to upgrade Data Protector from 5.0 to 6.5)
Maintains library of documentation for system software.
Maintains space utilization statistics, forecast future space requirements.
Implements and manages system to proactively monitor infrastructure. (in the near future the current monitoring software is going away. so someone will need to write scripts to monitor the environments. Nothing terribly complicated...monitor file system utilization, server availability and error messages in the syslog.log file)
Responsible for preparation, documentation and participation in Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity initiatives. This includes the routine maintenance of offsite documentation and media required for the recovery process as well as preparation for and participation in Disaster Recovery tests and post-test reporting. (i wrote DR scripts that automatically create DR documentation...a step-by-step guide to recovering the OS and file systems at the DR Exercise at Sungard)
Out of hours and on-call obligations are to be anticipated in normal operations. (On-call is every other week Wednesday till Wednesday.)
Minimum skills and experience:
Minimum 8 years of relevant experience.
HP UNIX Certification highly desired.
 
*   Experience with HP hardware.
* Strong HP-UX 11.x skills
* Experience with LVM
* Experienced with using HP Ignite-UX.
* ServiceGuard cluster software setup.
* Building/applying patch bundles.
*   SAN familiarity a plus.
* Excellent troubleshooting skill and ability to understand complex relationships between components of the overall systems architecture
*   Experience with UNIX shell scripting a plus.
*   Experience with ssh, rsh, ftp, telnet, NFS and rcp
* Experience with Data Protector / Omniback a plus.
