There is power in being positive, power that can propel your job search forward at a much faster pace. People like working with people who enjoy what they do and show it. I have worked with many miserable people in my day, and I admit it - it's a drag. They are avoided, and not only that, negative press builds up about them. We all know who they are, those people our colleagues snipe and snicker about, the ones who break up a gathering simply by approaching. But we don't have to be those people to be passed over for an opportunity. Think for a moment of all the people you have met through networking. Which ones stand out? Which would you like to hear from again? Which would you consider going to lunch with? What do they have in common? If these are the people who make you feel charged with energy, call them, meet with them, learn from them, and be like them. A network is not something you plug into - it is something you build. I have a good friend who often talks about the dynamics of a group and the importance of hiring the right people. He would rather leave a position open than hire someone who detracts from the group. He calls the process of hiring the wrong person as SUBTRACTION BY ADDITION, and he isn't the only one who feels this way. In these times, hiring managers may think they are getting a select group of the best candidates to choose from, but recruiters don't always get it right.
