From Alison Doyle, your Guide to Job Searching
I used to think that job seekers could still have some fun on Facebook if they
were careful about their privacy settings. Now, I'm starting to think that
unless you are super careful and set your privacy settings so your profile is
almost in jail, it can be an issue when you're job searching - because more and
more companies are using social networking to recruit.
Companies Recruiting on Facebook and LinkedIn
According to a Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) survey, more
companies are recruiting on social networking websites and even more
organizations not using the sites currently are open to utilizing them in the
future. Only 21% of surveyed companies stated that they currently do not use
social networking sites and have no plans to do so.
Online Job Opportunities
Jobs posted by businesses seeking talent to work online grew 52% year-over-year
and 32% during the first quarter this year, while contractors from over 130
different countries earned 51% more year-over-year.
How Many Jobs Have You Had?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average number of times people
change jobs during their career is eleven. How about you? How many jobs have you
had, so far?
What Are You Passionate About?
What are you going to say when a hiring manager asks "Why were you fired? or
"What was your boss like? or "What are you passionate about?" (hint: your answer
doesn't have to be work related). Here are some suggestions for answering that
question about passion, plus add your answer to the list.
