Networking 101 Marty Latman

Posted by: "Keith Bogen SPHR" keith.bogen@yahoo.com   hrslugger2002

Networking Tips from Marty Latman, one of the truly amazing folks in the world
of "paying it forward"...

Networking 101 Marty Latman

Two general principles for job searching: ABC (Always Be Connected) and
ABP (Always Be Positive). For the former, make networking part of your life,
whether you're working or not. For the latter, maintain your balance by
cultivating a support system-an inner circle of people whom you can count on for
advice and use as a sounding board for ideas.

Being in transition affords you the opportunity to reflect on what you really
want to do and what kind of company you want to work for, as well as the ability
to make a change.

Action item:
On one side of a piece of paper, write down what you really like to do in your
personal life, and on the other side, what you don't like to do. Look at the top
five on each side to guide you to what you might like to do professionally.

When you're positive, you carry yourself differently and sound
differently. Fifty-five percent of communications is nonverbal (body
language), 38 percent is what you sound like (voice-is it confident or not?) and
just 7 percent is content (what you say).

Four keys to finding a job:
1. Networking (finding the hidden jobs);
2. Recruiters (retained or contingent; recommended source: Kennedy Directory of
Executive Recruiters);
3. Internet and classified postings;
4. Direct mail campaign (create your own job; contact companies directly through
a marketing letter).

Remember, recruiters work for the employer. If you use one, make sure it's in
your specialty. Ask your peers for recommendations.

Mike Palestina recommends spending 80 percent of your job search efforts on
networking, 5 percent or less on direct mail and 15 percent divided between job
boards, online research and recruiters.

Looking for a job is a full-time job; you should be devoting at least 35 to 40
hours a week to it.

What is networking? In a nutshell, relationship building. Rather than just
getting to know a lot of people, it's more important that a lot of people know
you, so when they talk to a third person who's looking to fill a job, they'll
know to mention you.

Network everywhere, both in groups and individually. There are three main
networks for the job seeker:
1. Your personal network (family and friends);
2. Your business network (former colleagues, customers, vendors, etc.); and
3. Your in-transition network (with whom you have a common bond.

We network for "AIR": advice, information and referrals.

Marty related a story he heard from a career coach to illustrate that everyone
is a potential networking source. A client of the coach was seeking a position
at AOL. Her family in the Midwest included an aunt in her 80s who played bridge.
The coach said she should talk to them. After some skepticism, the client agreed
to do so, and as a result landed the job at AOL. How did she do it? The coach
asked. Turns out one of the aunt's bridge partners had a son who was the
chairman of the board of AOL.

Networking with others in transition is helpful for various reasons. People
maintain networks with former colleagues, and networking provides a built-in
support system that can help keep your spirits up. One session participant
quoted motivational speaker Barbara Sher as saying, "Isolation is the dream
killer."

Always Be Connecting-not just for present jobs but for the future. Marty related
another story: He was applying for the CFO position at a New Jersey company that
manufactures a device used in the production of milk. At a small networking
group, Marty met a guy named Jim who was applying for the same job. After his
second interview, Marty called Jim and shared information he had learned about
the position and the company. After Jim verified the information in his next
interview, the two worked together to get the manufacturer to develop a
marketing plan. Marty was offered the job, but turned it down after he realized
it wasn't a good fit. Jim also got an offer, and also turned it down. The whole
time, the recruiter didn't know Marty and Jim knew each other. Why did the two
talk? Relationship building.

Network everywhere. Formally: networking groups, volunteer organizations,
seminars, chambers of commerce, professional and trade organizations, alumni
groups, etc. Informally: places like the dentist, nail salon, supermarket,
church, cleaners, playgrounds, kids' sporting events, etc. Even the billing
department at your cable provider!

How do you approach people? Ask about him or her and how you can help them.
Don't ask them for a job! Make the person feel as if he or she can help you and
try to make them feel like a "winner". Practice with family and friends, then
connect with them on LinkedIn. At networking events, try approaching the
"wallflowers," those standing by themselves. You can also use visualization and
internalization to imagine a successful outcome before you approach somebody.
Another way to start a conversation is to ask the other person's opinion or
advice on something.

Marty suggested www.landingexpert.com for a list of networking groups in the
area; Marty said the list at the site has 58 pages. Mike urged session
participants to strive to set up five meetings with other CIT people there that
day.

It's important to establish solid relationships in order to build up a level of
trust; many people won't open up their Rolodexes for you until then.

Marty talked about the "tool bag" that every job seeker needs. Those resources
include business cards, name tags, a marketing plan, tailored resumes, an
additional one-page summary, elevator pitches, CARs and PARs (accomplishment
stories), LinkedIn profile, references, templates for cover letters, thank-you
notes and, last but not least, a positive attitude.

Regarding resumes, Mike noted that the summary/areas of expertise section is
what you should customize for each job opportunity. Marty said that he leaves
spaces in his resume so he can cut and paste PARs and CARs that are specific to
the needs of a particular job spec. One participant mentioned how she keeps the
cover letter, resume and job description together in a file for easy reference.

Include dates on your resume; you can't fight age discrimination. If they're not
going to hire you, they're not going to hire you. Include your photo on your
LinkedIn profile but not on your resume.

ELEVATOR SPEECHES

One attendee suggested using a webcam on your PC to record your elevator pitch,
then play it back as a learning device-as well as to get a good laugh! Another
participant suggested www.15secondpitch.com as a reference to help you develop a
good elevator pitch, as well as using networking meetings to practice your
elevator speech.

You need several pitches depending on your audience and your circumstances. If
you're a financial executive networking with other financial execs, you can use
industry-specific terms and jargon, such as SEC, IRS and SOX, while a pitch to
non-financial people should be more general.

Elevator pitches should be the 3 "C"s - Clear, Concise and Consistent. Speak
slowly, clearly and with sufficient volume. An elevator pitch should be a tease,
whetting a person's appetite to want to continue the conversation later. Mike
suggested developing a five-minute pitch first and gradually cutting it down to
two minutes, one minute and 30 seconds; that way, if the circumstances call for
a longer pitch, you'll have enough information to impart.

Consistency is important. You want to ensure that the person who passes on your
message to a third person conveys exactly what you want. The more degrees of
separation, the more important this becomes. Marty used one of the attendees to
illustrate this point. At a previous event, this person identified himself as a
"sound man." What the heck does that mean, participants wondered? But today,
this person got more specific in his pitch, mentioning voiceovers and other
details that made him more memorable and gave listeners a better idea of what he
was looking for.

Include targeted positions and companies in your elevator speech. Avoid a lot of
acronyms; it's better to say the full name of a company.

Be relaxed when you deliver your pitch. Don't dance around. Keep your hands out
of your pockets. Don't cross your arms. Start with your name, then pause, so the
listener can segue from sizing you up physically to focusing on what you're
about to say. Conclude with your name again for reinforcement. To steady nerves,
hold a pen by your side (but don't click it!).

SUMMING UP
· Employer-employee loyalty is dead. Don't expect a long career anymore.
· Job seeking has emotional ups and downs. Have your support group in
place.
· Create a structure. Manage your time. Go out and meet people; don't
spend hours on the Internet.
· Define your goals and objectives: what you want to do and where. Set
your destination and follow your path to get there. Keep your focus; it's easy
to get distracted.

As people give you advice, listen, but keep in mind, bottom line, it's your
choice what to pursue and to decide what's best for you. Build those networking
relationships. Have your tool bag with you. Remember: a job is temporary,
networking is permanent.
