Video Interviewing Cuts Costs, but Bias Worries Linger

* By Heather O'Neill
* October 5, 2011

One recruiter says that since incorporating online interviews she has cut
spending from about $10,000 per search to roughly $500. Yet an employment
lawyer advises clients to proceed with caution when using it.

. . .

"Video résumés are not necessarily riskier than face-to-face interviews, but
a talking head on a video does offer more information about a candidate than
even a photograph might," he said. "A video can give the viewer clues to the
candidate's class, race, nationality and can also potentially reveal any
disability the candidate might have."

Chun suggests adopting a screening process that requires the use of a paper
or electronic résumé as the first tier of consideration before video is
introduced. Whether it is on the beginning or end of the hiring process, he
said companies need to create a set of objective qualities, like education,
experience, writing samples, references and test results so that if
candidates are rejected, there is a reason.

5 More Great Part-time Jobs for Retirees

Blogging, coaching or teaching provide opportunities for income with
flexible schedules

by: Kerry Hannon <http://www.aarp.org/work/experts/kerry-hannon/> | from:
AARP <http://www.aarp.org> | Updated July 2011

Just recently, relatively few retirees took on part-time jobs. Today, the
majority of retirees are working as a way to stay engaged, support a
lifestyle or both.

For Jose and Jill Ferrer, ages 61 and 56, respectively, it's the whole ball
of wax. When they retired from telecommunications careers
<http://jobs.aarp.org/jobs/telecommunications-in-usa> that spanned nearly
three decades at AT&T, they sold their townhouse in Randolph, N.J., for
about $360,000 and hit the road.

Since 2005, they've traveled full time from Oregon to New Mexico to Florida
and points in between at the wheel of their 40-foot Country Coach Allure
motor home (paid for with cash). A Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail
motorcycle, a Saturn car and two bikes are along for the ride.
