Subject: [JSAHRTransition] Reinventing Yourself 2010 Style

A few of our members asked me to share a presentation I did with the
Monmouth Job Search Networking. Here are my 7 Hints:

1. Know what's needed. Your job was eliminated. The exact same job
likely doesn't exist or you would be UN-Available. Be a Trend
Tracker-what' s needed in the marketplace from your Tool Kit and Skill
Set?

2. Know how you Stand Out from the Crowd. There are 400 people for every
Corporate job opening now, not 50. Figure out what's Unique about you
and
determine your main focus.

3. Know how to be of Value and Service in a Different way. Ask. Observe.
So, do you use existing management or technical skills in a totally new
way
or different environment? What industries need your expertise?

4. Know whether you are a Generic or Generalist vs. Specific or
Specialist. What's in demand in 2010? What will continue to be in 2011,
2012? What's not in demand-stay away from that even if you know it well.

5. Know whether or not a COMPLETE CAREER CHANGEOVER is right for you.
Any change involves RE-education, RE-tooling skills, NEW faces, NEW
networks, NEW skills needed and NEW colleagues. How long are the
learning
requirements and your learning curve? What phase of life are you in?

6. Know the people who count who can advocate or mentor you now. "People
hire who they know or who are referrals by a trusted colleague or
friend."
(sez Donna) Get known by a wider range of people in /out of your field.
Don't rush it. Everyone knows 200-300 people, not all like them. Ask for an
e-mail introduction- never contact someone directly without an
introduction,
they'll Delete your e-mail!

7. Know that ageism exists. If you are very young or much older, you
need to impress people IN PERSON. They'll ditch your resume if they
think
you're too light or too heavy with experience. It's all about
assumptions:
Too young to know anything, too old to learn new technology tricks. Bash the
stereotype by impressing them with your PRESENCE (good appearance, good
clothing still counts in 2010) and your KNOWLEDGE. Be succinct. Listen
to
their pain and show how you can resolve issues or challenges.
