Job Description:

Client is seeking a Mainframe Engineering Consultant to join their team in Jersey City , NJ .

End to end knowledge/experience with IBM System Z10 or Z9 architectures is required.

The individual in this role needs to have knowledge of capacity planning on IBM system Z. Work at the highest systems level to provide expert advice and counsel to users, management and IT project teams for systems of the most complex nature. Evaluate new technologies and develops departmental standard practices.

This position is responsible for the providing comprehensive support for design, implementation, and 3rd level support of all IBM System 'Z' based applications for systems. This includes all program products require to run on these platforms.

Qualified candidates will be able to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences and have a good understanding and experience of server and client side architectures and systems design.

 

Experience/Knowledge:

Ø       BS/BA, (Education may be substituted for increased years in experience on a year-for-year basis.)

Ø       5+ years expertise in z/VM with Z/Linux is required.

Ø       Update, maintain and tune z/VM operating systems and IFL's.

Ø       Understanding of configuring zLinux and Z/VM.

Ø       SMPE, HMC,OSA,I/O configurations, Book Technology, Capacity on Demand.

Ø       Mentor Junior personnel.

Ø       Out-of-the-box thinker driven to lower costs using conventional/non-conventional solutions.

We are looking for a high energy, self-starting individual to be responsible for systems administration. maintenance and evolution of our computing environment, focusing on automation. This is not an entry level position. 3 to 5 years of experience is preferable.

 

Our group specializes in high frequency global equity statistical arbitrage trading. Everyone is very technical and focuses heavily on using a variety of technologies to automate as much as possible. Our systems environment started small scale and has grown organically as the need has risen. We now have an array of Windows and Linux production servers, research servers, Linux desktops, storage servers deployed across 2 locations.

 

The goal has been to apply enterprise level practices to our environment, infrastructure control, disaster planning, and software configuration management and deployment. In addition to the specific requirements below, the ideal candidate will operate across a broad set of technologies and learn on the job to make this goal a reality. Our expectation is that the majority of the time will be spent doing software scripting to robustly automate the environment. This is more than a systems administration role as the group will rely on the candidate to stay abreast of new technologies to be able to research, plan, evolve, and grow infrastructure to meet expanding needs of the business.

 

Responsibilities

Install and maintain Linux and Windows server systems.

24x7 on call duties for production data center systems.

Ensure that data, phone and power cabling is up and running during business hours.

Maintain and improve upon existing documentation describing IT systems and procedures.

 

Qualities we are looking for in a new hire include:

Ø       Broad knowledge of System and Linux administration, specifically Red Hat including NFS, Samba, NIS, Users/Groups, Sudo, Apache + Tomcat, NTP. Candidate is expected to have expertise and understand the configuration, management, maintenance, and tuning of Linux.

Ø       Strong Perl and bash scripting.

Ø       Ability to physically install, configure, and maintain rack-mounted server systems.

Ø       Software configuration management.

Ø       Experience in operating in large-scale, enterprise level systems in a production environment.

Ø       Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment.

Ø       The person must have a mindset of automating what is possible.
