MHT survey: Tech job openings expected to grow

Technology jobs may be on the rebound, as more respondents to a recent Mass
High Tech survey said they would be adding employees soon, compared to
respondents in the second quarter of 2009. According to the survey, 56.8
percent of the 861 companies surveyed said they would be adding staff,
versus 51.9 percent in the second quarter.

In addition, the number of respondents who were anticipating job cuts in Q3
dropped to half of one percent, down from 1.8 percent in the second quarter
of the year. The telecom sector reported no planned job cuts at all in Q3,
down from 3 percent of telecom respondents saying their staff levels would
decrease in the second quarter.

Biotech/med tech also had no respondents planning layoffs in Q3, down from
2.8 percent in Q2. The software sector was about even at 0.3 percent in Q3
and 0.4 percent in Q2. The Internet sector was the only one to see an
increase on the number of potential job cuts, as the number of respondents
saying layoffs would occur in Q3 ticked up to 1.1 percent from zero in Q2.

The overall confidence level of tech execs also climbed in Q3. Those
reporting some level of confidence in the tech sector climbed from 79.3
percent of respondents in Q2 to 84.4 in Q3.

Position Responsibilities - Summary

The Senior Systems Engineer will contribute to the overall engineering,
design, build and provide high level support of all existing and new Windows
Server infrastructure. As a senior member of the team, the successful
candidate will need to work closely with our internal clients to develop
consensus and find solutions to problems facing their business constituents.

Detailed Responsibilities;

· Monitor windows environment for anomalies and errors, reporting
and escalation of issues.
· Provide the required daily support, maintenance, and management of
the platforms.
· Provide Level III support and repair, as well as escalation to the
Business Application Group and/or Operations.
· Manager enterprise applications responsible for server builds,
patch management, virtual machine management, virus scanning, etc.
· Develop and maintain high standards in establishing procedures and
policies to address routine jobs and certain resolution protocols.
· Meet or exceed SLA obligations consistently and on an ongoing
basis, allow for accurate metrics to measure response time, meet BCP
requirements for offsite access, and reduce the time needed to address
hardware/software failures.

Keys to This Position:

1. We are looking for a Very Senior Windows Systems Engineer that has
strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills.
2. In-depth Knowledge of VMware architecture and hands on experience with
V-motion, ESX Ranger and other virtual management software. VMware and ESX
are required. The most recent version of ESX is 3.x
3. We are presently using Windows 2003 server and will be migrating to
Windows 2008. The candidate needs to have 2003 server (2008 would be a
plus).
4. Strong Active Directory and Microsoft Clustering skills are required.
5. The candidate should come from a large production environment - (700+
Windows Servers globally)

Required Skills and Competencies:

· 8+ years of managing a Windows Server environment (Windows 2003
Server required)
· In-depth Knowledge of VMware architecture and hands on experience
with V-motion, ESX Ranger and other virtual management software
· Extensive experience with Microsoft Clustering
· Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve independently
· The ability to design and build an Active Directory infrastructure
· Hands on management of an Active Directory infrastructure
· Proficiency in DNS, DHCP and other naming services
· Server management with an emphasis on HP servers
· In-depth Knowledge of disk management with SAN, NAS and local
storage with an emphasis on disk layout and performance
· Strong systems engineering skills with an emphasis on enterprise
scale architecture
· LINUX skills are highly desired.
· Understanding of High Availability, Business Continuity, and
Disaster Recovery concepts as they relate to Open Systems architecture.

The individual will be leading the system design and analysis for
development projects in the End-Of-day Pricing Application in the Investment
Data Systems team. In this role the individual will work with the project
managers, business analysts and lead programmers to define technical
solutions and roadmap for implementing business requirements in our

integration with the downstream consumers of pricing data. This person will
also be performing supervisory activities including budget management within

· Partner with Investment Data and Derivatives Services Business

firms growing needs around pricing and analytics in order to develop long
term scalable solutions.
· Take a hands-on approach to functional architecture and technical
design to deliver business solutions.
· Work with the Pricing Data consumer groups to understand their
requirements and help develop innovative solutions to address their data
needs.
· Provide input into system design to help the programming teams
define effort and implementation schedules for application development work.
· Ensure quality of product by enforcing high standards in testing
and building controls to measure the overall accuracy and timeliness of data
delivery.
· Develop a strong partnership with the delivery team to ensure on
time, scalable and high quality business solutions.
· Manage the overall budget of the team and help in planning and
budget estimations of various efforts.
· Provide team leadership on assigned projects that may include both
full time and consulting staff in a matrix organization.
Keys to This Position:
1. This is a Senior role that is a combination of Functional and Technical
with emphasis on the Functional.
2. The Domain (Functional) requirement: This candidate must have a strong
background in Investment Management with exposure to Back Office and Middle
Office Operations. This individual will be responsible for Reference Data
Applications that includes Pricing, Security Master, Analytics and
Derivative Operations. Any experience in these areas is a very strong plus.
3. Technical: The applications are written in Java (J2EE), PL/SQL and Data
Stage. Experience as an Analyst working with applications built with these
technologies is a big plus.
4. The candidate must have Excellent Communication and Client Relationship
skills. The individual will be interfacing directly with the business
(Investment Data and Derivatives Systems Operations).
Required Skills and Competencies:
· Strong understanding of Investment Data and Investment Management
industry, with specific domain expertise in Pricing and analytics
· Minimum 10 years experience as a systems analyst
· Minimum 5 years experience in Data Management
· Minimum of 5 years of Project Management experience is required.
· Experience in working with data providers such as IDC and Reuters.
· CFA certification is a plus.
· Experience in the design of n-tier applications and architectures.
· Experience with SOA architecture will be a huge plus.
· Team management experience and a proven ability to work in a cross
functional environment
· Experience in managing delivery in a centralized team with
aggressive delivery timelines is required.
· Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills.

· Collaborate with application development teams and other central
groups to provide vision and generate reusable solutions in terms of
architecture blueprints, best practices, vendor products and custom software
extensions.
Keys to This Position:
1. Technical: Working experience in technologies including Java/J2EE,
Oracle, Spring Framework, Struts, Hibernate, SOA, XML, JMS, etc.
2. Domain Knowledge: Investment Management experience is required.
Ideally the candidate will have Asset Management Experience and more
specifically Investment Data (such as Security Master (CSM) and Pricing).
3. Experience in leading and managing team of 8+ developers (employees and
consultants).
4. The position breaks down as follows: 20% hands-on development, 50%
design and architecture work, 30% management/leadership. The keys are:
Architecture, Leadership and Delivery.
Required Skills and Competencies:
· A minimum of 8 years as an enterprise developer
· Strong team leadership and management skills
· At least 2 years of experience in directly managing teams
· Ability to operate with less than perfect information and make
quick decisions when necessary
· Experience with the investment related data is required
· A minimum of two years of experience in working with offshore
development teams
· Must have 3+ solid years of OO design and development experience
· Must have 3+ years developing complex n-tiered architectures
· At least 5 years of software development experience on the
Java/J2EE platform
· 5 years of relational database programming experience with Oracle
· Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and verbal
communication skills and ability to articulate technical solution to the
business team members
· Must be able to independently design, coordinate complex projects.
