CAREER [and] LIFE

January, 2011

Hi everyone! Welcome to the first monthly newsletter and I hope to hear back from you with feedback.  This email, of course, is less about job search and more about helping you think strategically about your career and life.

So here goes:

Don't Crawl Under A Rock
One of the biggest mistakes you can make in a career today is to stop networking (besides never doing it that is).  It is easy to stop after a job search. And stopping is easy to justify with the demands we all have on our time.

So what are a few ways to make it easy?

1. Make yourself available for others.  Let friends know that you are available to help with career ideas and advice.  Contact the leaders of a few local networking groups - let them know you are available as a mentor for job-seeking or career seeking members. And that you are open to hosting a job seeker for an informational interview.

2. Eat with a stranger. At least once a week (perhaps every Friday), break bread with someone new.  Start with a list of key people in your company you'd like to meet. Then begin looking outside your company for new lunch dates.  Use LinkedIn to identify others in your industry or function to meet for a coffee. If your job were to end in three months, all these interactions will make for a great start to a job search.

3. Become a person of influence. Networking is easier when you are employed.  You have a built-in platform and credibility. SO how do you maintain a platform when you need it most? You share your subject matter expertise with others.  Write a blog, a white paper or an article for your industry association.  If you like to talk, make yourself available for conference panels or speaking engagements. When people know you outside your company, you have a stable platform that will not disappear if you lose your job.

The Pursuit of Happiness
From an article in Psychology Today by Carlin Flora, a few thoughts on happiness, how to find it and what makes it challenging:
  • Not everyone agrees that happiness is a good objective.  Some think that experiencing sadness is important and necessary.
  • Experts say happiness is not about smiling all day long.  Most experts agree it is more about satisfaction or contentment. "It encompasses living a meaningful life, utilizing your gifts and your time, living with thought and purpose."
  • Happiness is maximized when you are part of a community.  "It involves a willingness to learn and stretch and grow, which sometimes involves discomfort. It requires acting on life, not merely taking it in."
So what community should you be joining?  What goals can you set to help with stretching and growing? What action can you take to move an idea forward?
Here are some articles you may have missed from the blog:
