DIRECTOR OF WEB SITE AND ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS

SUMMARY:

This is a full-time position which is responsible to coordinate the planning, maintenance, and accessibility of Web site, ensuring the consistency of the Web site's look and feel. The Director is also responsible for administering, maintaining and expanding the related FlickR site and GCU Blog site. Understanding of Web development and site management tools is required. Reports to the VP of Marketing and External Affairs and works in close collaboration with the Office of Information Technology.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Planning, Acquisition, & Deployment Duties:

* Responsible for the web strategic plan for Web site development, including standards and guidelines for content, based on university goals and the overall strategic plan of the university. * Co-ordinate tasks and activities with offices, departments and content creators from across the campus community. * Liaise with systems experts on hardware and software issues that affect the Web site and its availability; assess and itemize costs for Web site enhancements and modifications. * Analyze competing Web sites with regard to content, visuals, and functionality, and make ongoing improvement recommendations to our university's site. * Manage hosting and ongoing maintenance of the university's Web sites with appropriate vendors. * Track and evaluate new standards, technologies and trends in Web site development, design, and delivery. * Research, recommend, and purchase Web authoring, development, and publishing tools as required.

Operational Management & Training Duties:

* Create and maintain a consistent Web site architectural structure. * Ensure a consistent look and feel across the Web site by providing appropriate templates and content standards to assist content authors. * Prepare and administer budget and evaluations in a timely fashion. Negotiate and contract out web hosting and web coding when necessary. * Design, develop, and maintain GCU website, FlickR site, and blog site; execute daily operations and overall administration for these external sites. * Work with web authors to provide/update content and create/design key sub-Webs; supervise and instruct users of Ektron, FlickR, and WordPress on best practices and use of Web elements. * Prepare customized training materials & documentation; provide training and support to designated users, including faculty and administrators, on use of Ektron and/or WordPress. * Knowledge of web content management systems, Ektron preferred; demonstrate strong working knowledge of HTML and web development tools, including Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, Flash, etc. * Work with a wide range of committees, functioning in a leadership role as chair of the GCU Web Subcommittee; as subject matter expert and contributing member of the Technology Overview and the Instructional Technology Subcommittees and as a contributing member of other committees as assigned. * Participate in the development and integration of graphical and multimedia components to the Web site, including audio and video. * Work closely with GCU departments and offices, such as Admissions and Advancement, to present a marketing image to attract prospective students and donors; assist other departments/ offices in maintaining GCU branding across their vendor hosted web sites. * Work with the Assistant Director of Web and Electronic Communication to respond to user requests and to balance the work load within the department. * Monitor, analyze, and report on Web site traffic to the VP of Marketing and External Affairs; recommend changes to the Web as needed. * Manage major projects under the guidance of the VP of Marketing and External Affairs and in close collaboration with the Office of Information Technology. * Stay abreast of industry trends and all applicable technologies, including scripting, security issues, authoring tools and web 2.0 initiatives. Spearheaded web initiatives. * Integrate the core values of respect, compassion, integrity, justice and service in all aspects of interaction. * Perform other web related duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor and Master's degrees required, and at least 10 years professional experience in the field. * Good knowledge of Web technologies, including content management systems, Web development applications, social networking systems, such as Facebook, and blogging. * Experience with HTML, CSS, Google Analytics, WordPress. Knowledge of Javascript, or WebTrends a plus. * Working knowledge of Web authoring, development, and publishing tools, including Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop. Proficiency in Flash a plus. * Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects independently. * Strong understanding of communications, marketing, and customer service principles. * Experience with computer graphic and multimedia design. * Comprehensive experience with all aspects of Web site content management. * Understanding of basic project management principles. * Good understanding of the university's mission, goals and objectives. * Excellent knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.

Personal Attributes:

* Excellent written and oral communication skills, including editing and proofreading skills; knowledge of AP style a plus. * Must have experience with project management, and knowledge of corporate identity and branding. * Ability to function in a leadership position; ability to work with and supervise others. * Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment. * Excellent interpersonal skills. * Ability to conduct research into emerging Web technologies. * Highly motivated and self-directed. * Keen attention to detail. * Good analytical and problem-solving abilities. * Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. * Very strong customer service orientation.
