Is a Career in Sales Right for You?

By CollegeRecruiter

Sales is one of many career fields that doesn't require candidates to have
any specialized training or education to qualify. All learning is done on
the job. The drawback to this is that many employers want entry level sales
representatives
<http://www.collegerecruiter.com/custom/?q=sales&submit=Search> to have at
least one or two years of experience; but, how can someone get sales
experience if he can't get a sales job?

Getting sales experience is easier than most people might think. Cashiers in
fast food restaurants and department stores are sales reps, of sorts. For
example, when I worked as a cashier at a bagel shop - just one of many
duties - the manager instructed me to sell as many desserts as possible to
people who bought combo meals. The pitch was that adding a dessert to their
orders would only add from $.50 to $.80 to their totals. Most people
declined - possibly because the desserts were big enough to feed a whole
family - but some said yes. It's the same principle as McDonald's cashiers
offering customers the options of super sizing their combo meals. Although
it's nothing like trying to sell new cash registers to the McDonald's
franchise owner, it is a start.

Retail sales is the same. Cashiers are sometimes required to pitch extended
warranties when people buy electronics or appliances or store charge
accounts. The people who work the selling floor, though, are more like
customer service reps. Of course, there could occasionally come a time when
a customer asks a question that opens the door for the sales associate to
push a store brand over a name brand.

Although working in fast food and retail don't give candidates strong sales
backgrounds, they do provide valuable experience in working with the general
public, troubleshooting and problem solving, and verbal communications.
Telemarketing <http://www.collegerecruiter.com/custom/?q=telemarketing> , on
the other hand, is a great way for an aspiring sales rep to learn how to
sell a product or service.

Telemarketing, like regular sales, involves a lot of cold calling and it's
not for the thin skinned. Because so many people dislike telemarketers,
rejection is common, so anyone who gets discouraged easily might want to
reconsider a career in sales. Persistence and resilience are essential
characteristics for successful salespeople.

The real key to success in any sales job - after personability - is product
or service knowledge. No one wants to buy a product from someone who doesn't
know anything about what he's selling. When I telemarketed for a local arts
organization, we got to interview the performers, see and touch costumes,
and attend dress rehearsals so we could speak with authority about upcoming
premier productions. We were also encouraged to take advantage of the free
tickets to see the performances because there's no better way to establish a
rapport with a customer than through a shared experience. Attending the
performances helped us to be knowledgeable about the theater, too. Selling
seats is a lot easier for someone who has actually been in the theater and
viewed the stage from the audience's perspective.

Besides a high school diploma or GED, candidates interested in sales careers
should also have good verbal communications skills, basic math skills,
problem solving skills and an affinity for working with people - all of
which can be learned while working in fast food, retail or telemarketing.
Anyone who's interested in moving up to a managerial position or higher
should have at least a bachelor's degree. Earning potential for sales reps
varies by industry.

Depending on the product or service that's being sold, a sales rep could
earn anywhere from approximately $45,000 a year to over $80,000 a year,
according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. With commissions and bonuses
added in, some, like pharmaceutical
<http://www.collegerecruiter.com/custom/?q=sales> sales reps, could find
themselves earning as much as $100,000 per year.

While it's true that having a bachelor's degree opens a lot of doors for
people professionally, some people want to explore other options. Sales is
one of them. Entry level jobs in sales
<http://www.collegerecruiter.com/custom/?q=sales> don't pay well for the
inexperienced, but with training and experience, a new sales rep could begin
to earn a comfortable salary within two or three years.
