Re: What is a Good Objective for a Resume?

Supposedly now this is a very top-line summary of who you are and what you bring
to the table. It's not even called an objective anymore, but a summary:

Summary: Experienced Sherpa with 17 years technical climbing/expedition
support. Conqueror of 8 Himalayan Peaks including Everest, K2, Ama Dablam.
Three time Silver Cup winner for losing less than 2 guests per expedition.

as opposed to:

Objective: To obtain position as guide on high altitude Everest summit attempt
from either Nepal or Kangshi Face using my climbing skills and willingness to
work without oxygen.

You can see how the summary is much more helpful to the hiring manager trying to
sort through 500 resumes (some from sherpas, some from displaced IT executives
looking to change careers), because it gives them a 5 second overview of who you
are.

I couldn't disagree with this statement more!

Your career goals are just those - YOUR career goals. They aren't about me, the
hiring manager. They aren't about solving my problems. They are about what YOU
want.

It isn't that your career goals are irrelevant to me, it's that you first have
to get me engaged before they become relevant. Once I've decided to meet with
you and interview you, I will want to know about those, but to even get me to
want to do that, you have to be completely focused on what is relevant to me.
You have to concentrate on answering the "WIIFM" question for me - "What's In It
For Me?", where "me" is the hiring manager.

Managing the Black Hole: The Executive's Guide to Software Project Risk
Presented By Gary Gack
In this webinar, Computer Aid University (CAI-U) hosts a book discussion on
"Managing the Black Hole: The Executive's Guide to Software Project Risk" with
author Gary Gack. More and more businesses and government agencies are finding
software and IT to be crucial to their success and efficiency. This increased
reliance is revealing many shortcomings in the way that software projects are
managed. This book examines the root causes of project failure – the "Seven
Deadly Sins" - and provides a non-technical introduction to a range of proven
remedies (the "Five Redeeming Virtues"). The ideas in this book will enable any
organization to join the elite few who have taken these lessons to heart. In
this webcast, we will briefly discuss the book and how Gary's comprehensive
training is uniquely suited to your needs. As a complementary gift, a 1-month
access credit to Gary's "Understanding Lean Six Sigma" course will be made
available to those attendees that request it.
