Many people have been sharing and commenting on the NY Times article about "Networks Too Big for Their Own Good". I doubt that the Times will print my letter, but here was my response to the column, if you're interested.
Only the best,
Ron
Mr. Piccoult's fine article about networks makes several excellent
points. Relying on networks to find talented candidates does make
sense. Unfortunately the way networks are abused today does not.
Networking has evolved to the point that people must have at least two
networks and not confuse how each is to be used. Your inner network of
people who know you, are familiar with your work, and are able to
confidently recommend you is invaluable. This network must be
carefully cultivated and protected. These are people who can help you
immensely in your job search as they can steer opportunities your way
that you may not otherwise have found and can refer you to the
recruiter or, even better, the hiring manager.
The super-sized
networks that exist on social media like LinkedIn are best used as
sources of information or as a research tool either to find out about
companies or opportunities. Expecting a LION (LinkedIn Open Networker)
with thousands of connections who has never met you to refer openings
or to recommend you to those doing the hiring makes about as much sense
as waiting for Bill Gates to send you checks for forwarding e-mails.
Traditional
"phone-and-shoe-leather" networking will not be replaced by online
networking but each should be used to effectively complement the other.
Sincerely,
Ronald M. Katz
