Mass. unemployment drops in October

The unemployment rate in Massachusetts dropped to 8.9 percent in October
from 9.3 percent as the national unemployment rate soared above 10 percent,
according to the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The recorded drop is the first monthly decline in unemployment since June
2007 and comes despite the loss of 900 jobs in October. Strong job gains
were recorded by the professional, scientific and business services sector,
which added 4,100 jobs last month, and the education and health services
sector, which added 1,500 jobs.

Construction, an industry hit hard by the recession, added 100 jobs
according to a sample survey of employers. The monthly job gain is the
sector's first since February, and leaves construction workers with nearly
17 percent fewer jobs than a year ago.

The manufacturing sector lost 2,300 jobs in October while the trade,
transportation and utilities sector lost 1,700 jobs.

While the statistics are an improvement over last month, the state estimates
nearly 110,000 more Massachusetts residents were unemployed last month
compared with October 2008.
