Software Engineers
The New York Times is looking for a creative and talented Senior Platform Engineer to work as part of the team that builds and maintains the core software platforms that power our site. As part of our platform team, you will work with and write the applications and APIs that provide the core abilities to deliver optimized dynamic and static content components for consumption by an array of downstream consumers.
Responsibilities include:
* Building software tools and APIs for internal and external consumption that help other engineers leverage data and functionalities more efficiently
* Optimization engineering for scalability (speed, high availability and minimized footprint)
* Working with stakeholders across the company as part of a team
* Integrating third party content and other data sources into nytimes.com systems
* The ability to quickly jump into and learn existing systems built in PHP, Java, Perl, et al
Requirements:
* B.S. Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
* Solid understanding of distributed, scalable web application architecture
* Fundamentals of software design
* 3-5+ years experience programming in PHP and/or Java
* An understanding of object oriented software and design patterns
* Experience with full product lifecycles.
* Experience writing software that reads, writes, and manipulates XML
* Unix / Linux proficiency
* Strong experience working with and writing complex, optimized SQL including stored
procedures, functions and triggers.
* Experience with writing web services such as REST, SOAP, SAML
* Experience with Cloud Computing is a plus (e.g. EC2, Hadoop)
* Understanding of lower level systems and networking a plus
