Best Ways to Successfully Find a Job when You're Older

Age Isn't a Problem If You Make the Right Moves when Searching for a Job

By Herman Cruz

Older workers often have special skills or knowledge that can make it easier
for them determine the types of jobs they should look for. This doesn't mean
that it has to be a fancy skill. It may be something like extensive
knowledge in gardening which is also a skill that's developed by practice,
which also counts when looking for a job.

In order to get on track to land a job without having to consider your age
as a roadblock you will need an inventory of things that you like and
dislike, a listing of available jobs, a job-search strategy, pre-interview
requirements from employers, and Occupational Outlook Handbook can be very
helpful but it isn't crucial and the same applies to joining a support
group.

The first step will to make a list of personal types of activities that you
like and dislike, once you have those listed choose the ones that know you
do well and enjoy doing as well, whether it is for work or in your leisure
time.

Do some research to identify which jobs are in demand at the time you begin
searching for a job. Once you have a list of those jobs, match them to your
previous list of things that you like and dislike to do and find employers
that are potentially hiring in those fields.

You can also check the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational
<http://www.bls.gov/OCO/> Outlook Handbook for hundreds of job descriptions
with their required skills, and also learn about the anticipated demand for
workers in these areas.

Always consider alternative and flexible jobs, part-time work should also be
a possibility, the same would apply to telecommuting, consulting or
temporary jobs.

In order to find job openings, you must work on developing a job-search plan
that involves networking with other people that work in the fields that
interest you so you can learn of potential opportunities and prepare a
resume accordingly. Consider maximizing your chances of getting hired by
upgrading your skills. Take a class on an area that interests you.

Before any job interview, prepare yourself by learning as much as possible
about the employer's business that's giving you the interview.

If for any reason you feel that an employer displays a discriminating
attitude against you due to your age, issue a complaint by filing it with
the Equal <http://www.eeoc.gov/> Employment Opportunity Commission.

Lastly, joining a career or job support group is always very productive,
mostly if you feel insecure and lack confidence about getting back in the
corporate world as an older person. This will build your security and will
prep you.

Why Can't You Just Look Me In The Eye?

513769&utm_campaign=0> Screen shot 2010-02-14 at 6.52.40 AMThis has come up
before, but let me share something. I don't ask for much from you. Perhaps
a referral. Tell someone about this site. An occasional Stumble or save to
Delicious. But not much else.

So, do me a favor.

Look me in the eye. And do the same for everyone else in your network.

There's a great scene from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Clint Eastwood
stares down two other gunmen. Competing for a few bags of cash. Waiting
for someone to make a move. With everything on the line.

But, fortunate for you, networking is not at all like a gunfight. And
shifty-eyed is no way to build friendships. With people who you need to
meet and create an impression.

So next time you find yourself at a networking event or meet someone at a
local coffee shop, do this.

Maintain eye contact. It says you are listening. And that your time right
now is dedicated to learning about who they are. And what is happening in
their world. Right now.

And if you get in to a three way conversation where you have to pay
attention to two others, take a full drink of each person as they speak.
And then you can shift your eyes.

After all, no one is pointing a gun at you.
