A 30 minute presentation about the emotions of the person in transition

The emotional aspect of being in transition between jobs is something that
most, if not all people in that predicament go through. It is a subject
which does not get a lot of press and it is rather suppressed. It is not a
pleasant subject! Those in it have a hard time dealing with it and those on
the outside, despite the fact that they want to help, very often do not know
how. The following presentation deals with this subject and provides some
answers. Click on the following link and wait for this file to download.
This presentation is about 30 minutes. Enjoy!

Subject: [NewEnglandNetworking] Five Questions to Always Ask on an Interview
To: newenglandnetworking@yahoogroups.com

**

**

*Five Questions to Always Ask on an Interview*

These five questions go beyond the obvious ones, such as the title of the
job, the job description, to whom it would be reporting, and other such
basic questions. In fact, it's unlikely you'll even need to ask those
questions, as they're usually outlined for you.

With some preparation and thought, you should be able to easily come up with
15 - 20 first-interview questions to ask. But these five - in some form -
should always be asked. Not only will they help you to ascertain if the job
for which you are interviewing meets the criterion of your perfect job, but
the answers, when put together, will give you a fairly accurate picture of
what's really going on behind the interview.

1.

*What are the priorities that will need to be addressed immediately in
this position?*

A title alone tells you nothing. The job description won't reveal much
either, except whether or not you're capable of doing what's required
functionally on a daily basis. For the same reason that you put your
accomplishments on your resume - and not just the job description - here,
too, you want to get a sense of the individuality of this job in this
company.

Was everything left running smoothly? Is it pretty much picking up and
continuing daily functions as normal? Or is there damage control that needs
to be done? If so, is there a time line for the repair, and is it an
achievable one considering your capabilities? Is it realistic regardless of
who holds the position?

If you don't have any information, this will begin to clue you in about both
the supervisor and the previous employee. If you have been provided with
some detail already, then the answer should track with what you've already
learned.

1.

*How long was the previous person here? Why did they leave? *

Generally, in answering the first part, the interviewer will answer the
second part as well. But if they don't, then ask it. And if that person was
there an oddly short time, you also want to know how long the person before
that was there.

See where I'm going with this? If the job is in disarray, and the last two
people were there a short period of time and were fired, you don't need to
ask any of the other questions here. Exit gracefully and then run! Because
before long, you, too, will be terminated for not achieving whatever it is
they want done - regardless of if the stated time frame sounded realistic or
not.

1.

*Tell me about your management style. How do you bring out the best in
your employees?*

Is he a micro manager? Is he an information hound that needs to be kept
informed of everything? Does he leave people alone to do what he hired them
for and simply keep on top of what's going on? Does he help you if you have
trouble? Do any mentoring? Or is he a berating, derogatory, jerk?

Obviously he's not going to come right out and tell you he's a micro
manager! Instead he might say, "I like to keep a very close watch on what's
going on in my department," or "I visit with each member of my department on
a daily basis to make sure they're staying on track," or something similar.

You'll find that the person will be fairly straightforward in sharing their
management style with you. What you want to pay attention to is how they
word it.

1.

*What types of people tend to excel here?*

Workaholics? Ones who are self-motivated and manage themselves well? People
who work well in teams or committees? Employees who keep their supervisor
informed of "where they are with things" on a daily basis?

This tells you something about the pervasive culture in the company or
department. Generally speaking, companies - or departments - tend to be made
up of similar types of people that are in harmony with the company culture
and philosophy.

An entrepreneurial person won't function well in a committee environment.
While sales personalities can vary greatly, the top achievers are goal
driven and motivated to achieve, rather than complacent. People who are
accustomed to thinking for themselves will find themselves chafing in a
company that has a more dictatorial style, while those who perform better
when they're told what to do will find themselves adrift in a company that
requires its employees to think for themselves.

1.

*How long have you been here? Why do you stay?*

The answer to this question will give you an indication as to the feeling or
health of the department or company. The way in which he answers the
question will also give you additional insight into your potential boss, his
management style, and what type of people excel in the department or
company.

These are informational questions, not challenges. Be genuinely interested
in the answer, because you're gaining valuable information that has to do
with your future. When you leave the interview and process it within
yourself, you'll be matching what you learned with what you are looking for.

Pay attention to the interviewer's body language and facial expressions. Is
he relaxed? Does he fill in some of the spaces? Does he speak TO you - or AT
you? Does he answer the question briefly and then quickly fire off another
one? These, too, are valuable cues, and after the interview, you'll need to
piece them together with the verbal information you received.

Your perfect job might land in your lap by grace and good fortune. But more
likely, you'll need to look for it. It's there - but to recognize it, you'll
need to know what it doesn't look like, as well as what it does.

Chances are if you are looking for a new job, you want to put your best foot
forward - rather your best cover letter
<http://www.associatedcontent.com/topic/1463/cover_letters.html> and resume
forward. Cover letters
<http://www.associatedcontent.com/topic/1463/cover_letters.html> are a very
important part of your resume. They provide an introduction to a potential
employer, and they are a very necessary part of applying for a job.
Employers generally like to see a cover letter to get a better idea of who
the job candidate is professionally, and it is something of a prelude to the
resume. The following are some useful ways of how to write a better cover

When Are You Most Productive?

By Rachel Emma Silverman

We recently ran a post
<http://blogs.wsj.com/juggle/2011/07/25/set-rituals-to-get-things-done/> on
making important actions - like exercise or bedtimes - rituals
<http://blogs.hbr.org/schwartz/2011/05/the-only-way-to-get-important.html> ,
increasing the likelihood that they get done.

Setting rituals seems like a three-step process. First you need to
prioritize those actions that you want to ritualize. Second, you need to
take a hard look at your daily and weekly schedule to figure out the optimal
times to schedule those activities. Finally, you need to follow through and
actually do those actions at the scheduled times.

How to find a job: Dos and don'ts

July 25, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- It has never taken longer to find a job.
Job seekers look for an average of 10 months before finally securing a job.

Last week, new unemployment figures for Illinois show the rate increased to
9.2% in June. It was the second straight month the state jobless rate
increased. While the job outlook appears bleak, Career Builder,
careerbuilder.com <http://www.careerbuilder.com> , says there are jobs to be
had. The company tracked job listings in the Chicago area over the last 6
months to provide an insider's perspective on hiring trends.

The following five industries continue to see solid growth in hiring based
on Career Builder job listings:

4 Ways to Get Unstuck in Your Job Search

If you've been looking for a job for any length of time, you've probably run
into roadblocks.

Weeks go by with no job interviews. Employers don't call. And you start to
feel . stuck.

Where can you turn for new ideas to get "unstuck" in your job search?

I suggest you try "funnel vision."

As explained to me years ago by marketing master Jay Abraham, funnel vision
is the opposite of tunnel vision. It's a way of looking beyond your current
situation for new ideas, then adapting them to create breakthroughs.

Funnel vision is how Velcro was invented -- those tiny hooks that hold
clothing together were adapted from cockleburr seeds in nature.

Funnel vision is how drive-up windows came to fast-food restaurants --
before McDonald's installed their first one in 1975, drive-up service had
been used at banks since 1928.

To illustrate funnel vision for your job search, I'm going to adapt four
ideas from a terrific article on blogging at Typepad.com, called "10 Ways to
Find New Blog Topics" (www.typepad.com
<http://www.typepad.com/tips/blog-topics-tips.html> ).

See? We're already adapting -- from blogging to job hunting.

Here we go ...

1. Read the comments on career blogs for new ideas Some of the smartest
job search ideas come from ... smart job seekers.

Where can you find them? Oftentimes these people share their success stories
by posting helpful comments on blogs that deal with career and job-search
topics.

So, to generate new ideas for your job search, check out the comments posted
on high-traffic blogs. Many of the most popular are found at this link -
www.career.alltop.com.

2. Review your greatest hits

I'll break this idea down into two parts.

First, look back over your career. How did you find out about every job
you've had since you left school? Examples: You networked with a professor
in 1988, networked with a neighbor in 1992, answered a want ad in 1994,
called a recruiter in 2001, etc.

Now ask yourself: How could I repeat that or do something similar to it?

You may not find as many jobs listed in the Sunday paper today compared to
1994, for example, but what about the online edition of the newspaper? Or
what about looking through an industry newsletter or magazine that serves a
narrow niche? Trade publications can be a terrific source of job leads --
call your local library and ask for help finding them.

Second, what did you do and say to get hired for previous jobs? What's the
best cover letter you ever sent? What's the best line in your last resume?
The best answer you ever gave in a job interview?

Now ask yourself: How could I repeat those successes in my current job
search?

3. Do something different

To get different ideas, you have to start with different thoughts.

Example: How would you get a "job" on American Idol? Send a resume? No,
you'd audition. And before your audition, you'd practice like mad.

So, ask yourself this: Where and how could I "audition" for a job? Whom
would I have to contact to get an audition? And what skills would I have to
practice beforehand?

Approaching your job search as if it were an audition for "American Idol" is
just one way to do something different.

How would you get hired for a job as a bus driver? A tennis coach? A
senator? A mountain guide in Tibet?

You may be just one different tactic away from your next job. What is it?

4. Invite a guest author to write for you Ask three or five of the
most-successful people you know to send you their resumes and cover letters.
What parts can you adapt and use in your own documents?

Your friends will be flattered that you ask. Plus, you'll be doing some
"accidental networking" when you send them your revised resume and cover
letter to review, which is a nice secondary benefit.

Do you see how powerful a tool funnel vision can be? And there are plenty of
other ways for you to get unstuck -- I've adapted only four ideas from the
10 in that article on blogging.
