FINAL REMINDER - Dinner Mtg - Tues Feb 8th - Networking - Do You Get

Posted by: "john sampson" jcsspike@yahoo.com   jcsspike

Sun Feb 6, 2011 6:59 am (PST)

COMBINED DINNER MEETING
Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Snow Date February 9th

Networking – Do You Get It?

Raffle:  2 $100 Amex Gift Certificates donated by Razzino Associates

On Tuesday evening, February 8th, there will be a combined dinner meeting for current members, alumni, and guests of Association of Women in Computing (AWC),  IT-Networking, MIS Network Associates (MNA), Monmouth Networking, The Breakfast Club NJ (TBCNJ), ETP Network, and Careers in Transition (CIT) at the Holiday Inn, Totowa, NJ.

The dinner meeting will include a presentation by Rod  Colón:  Networking – Do You Get IT?

Most professionals both in and out of transition are familiar with the concept of personal networking. But do they get it?  Here are some comments from different professionals that really make us wonder:

-         I've been on LinkedIn for two years and have three connections.
-         I don't like all the IT people in the AWC or TBCNJ groups.
-         I've got a job, take me off the Yahoo Group.
-         I stop looking for a job at noon and go play golf.
-         I won't take an interview in New York, or South Jersey, or Mahwah.
-         Go to a meeting at 8am on Sat – you've got to be kidding!
-         I just got whacked, I'm going to take a month off and relax.

All of these comments do NOT suggest that the speaker gets networking!!!!  On February 8th Rod will tell you why.

Rod Colón has a unique perspective on what it takes to succeed in today's global economy.  Rod shares his 24 years of experience as a corporate HR management insider, outside agency recruiter, professional networker and career coach through a unique, common sense approach to networking and career management. His in-depth knowledge of international staffing, recruiting and networking gives Rod a unique ability to coach and consult today's professionals and executives around the world.
Rod uses his passion, energy, enthusiasm and creativity to support others. He coaches professionals in the art of leveraging relationships that maximizes personal networking opportunities. Rod has also taken this hand-on approach to corporations that recognize that an organization's bottom line success requires professionals to leverage internal and external networks.  Mastering the skills and techniques to effectively utilize these networks is critical and essential to the success of both the professional and their organization.
The Job Search & Networking School is an example of Rod's unique and creative approach. Through sessions designed to teach both basic cookbook job search techniques and advanced personal network development strategies that will outlive the current search, Rod reveals his depth of career management understanding.  Rod demonstrates to his students the power of networking as a giving and sharing activity, and aggressively encourages professionals to actively network and manage themselves as the CEO of ME, Inc.
Today the ETP Network (2.5 million LinkedIn professionals, 10,000 associates and 1300 Yahoo Groups members) leads the way in the education of networking as a core career management activity through networking events, career coaching programs, conference calls, training seminars, job openings, channel partnering and networking articles.
One of Rod's passions is teaching at Georgian Court University.  He believes GCU is on the cutting edge educating woman on career management and networking. His 3-credit course has already had a tremendous impact on many of his former students in their academic and professional goals, and the way they each view their role as active managers of their careers.
Rod has been featured in Princeton Review, and has received numerous awards and recognition.  Rod is a graduate Georgian Court University and is a board member of the Georgian Court Alumni Association.
The schedule for the dinner meeting on February 8th will be:

-         6:00 pm          Registration, cash bar, and "speed dating"
-         6:45 to 7:15    Individual introductions with RSVP list reference – see below
-         7:00 pm          Dinner
-         8:00 pm          Rod Colón's presentation with appropriate Q & A
-         9:15 pm approx   Gift raffles – you must be there to win

Following our usual meeting format, after you have registered and added your resume, etc. to the handout piles, everyone will participate in a series of informal networking groups of 3 to 5 participants,  i.e. "speed dating", before we sit down for dinner and the general introductions.  Briefly, these informal groups last for approximately 10 minutes.  At the end of the 10 minutes, the groups disperse, and new ones are formed with different participants.  Suggested dialogues for the groupings will be provided at the registration desk.

There will be an opportunity to circulate up to 50 copies of your resume, personal bio, leads, or other appropriate material in a handout from the dinner.

The cost will be $45 for everyone if forwarded by mail or other to John Sampson by COB by Feb 7th at 2 Blackfoot Cir, Wayne NJ 07470.  Checks should be made out to John. He can be reached at 973-248-3251. John's email is jcsspike@yahoo.com. Reservations can also be made through Lizanne Fiorentino at adminedg@optonline.net.

An RSVP list of attendees will be created and used to facilitate your networking activity. Current or last work affiliation, email address, and membership organization should be included with your check for the RSVP. If you are in transition, please include the names of three target companies and the kind of position(s) you are seeking. If you are currently employed, you should provide the name of your last three employers. The preliminary RSVP will be distributed to the recipients of the initial mailing of this announcement and to all those on the list the weekend before the dinner meeting for editing and informational purposes.  A "final" numbered RSVP list will be available at the registration desk on the 8th and can be used as part of your general introduction …"I'm # x on the RSVP list".

Since there will be walk-ins on the 8th, the actual final list will be emailed to the attendees as quickly as possible after the 8th. The RSVP # will also appear on your name badge which will be available at the registration desk on the 8th.

To repeat, the cost of the dinner will be $45 up to COB on Feb 7th. We will accept a LIMITED number of walk-ins on February 8th.  Their cost will be $60 without exception as well as for RSVP's whose checks have not been received by COB on the 7th. There will be NO refunds and no shows WILL be billed.

Again, attendees should bring 50 copies of their bio/resume, leads or materials they wish to be included in the handout for the evening of February 8th.

If you would like to help out at the meeting on the 8thth, volunteer to be a "Meeting Marshall".  Call John Sampson at 973-248-3251 for details. We can use your help!!!

Directions to the Holiday Inn at One Rt. 46 Westbound in Totowa Park can be found at www.holiday-inn.com/totowanj  The venue,  located on Rt. 46,  has substantial traffic at rush hour: therefore, you should allow at least 30 minutes additional time for your trip to Totowa on the 8th.

Please join us for an evening of improving your attempts to build your personal network, great networking opportunities, and/or a chance to just catch up. Everyone should remember that it is important to "Get It" about networking whether in or out of transition.

NETWORKING
One of the most effective ways to expand your circle of influence is through networking. Word of mouth can enhance not only your potential to discover opportunity, but it also can facilitate opportunity to discover you. Executive networking seeks to bring together experience-intensive individuals to interact with professionals of similar career levels from different industries, companies, and career aspirations. In these segments, you will network with management level individuals and recruiters to extend your sphere of influence, seek advancement opportunities, expand professional awareness, and to accelerate your career.

MANAGING JOB TRANSITION
The average American can expect to change jobs at least eleven times during his or her career. Taking a new position often opens the door to enhanced career opportunities and increased earnings. On the other hand, leaving an employer can present an employee with critical and potentially confusing decisions. Understanding the financial choices that are available can help protect you and your family.
Joseph Chu, First Vice President – Investments, Portfolio Manager, Senior Financial Advisor, will identify some problems that often occur in career transition and present possible strategies for resolution. The seminar seeks to help you take your first step to develop planning strategies to make the most of your assets and ensure a smooth and profitable transition.

HEALTH INSURANCE - ALTERNATIVES TO COBRA – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Now more than ever before, health insurance products and services change every day. For people in job transition, plan options and costs can be overwhelming – but it doesn't have to be. Don Moyle founded Insurance Navigation specifically to help an under-served market: individuals and small businesses who need assistance in navigating health insurance. During his 25 year career in health insurance, Don has worked both locally and internationally with such clients as American Express, jetBlue Airways and Hertz Corporation, just to name a few. For the last several years, Don has focused on the smaller market, bringing a wealth of experience and commitment to service in helping clients of all types with their health insurance needs.

USING SOCIAL MEDIA AND LINKEDIN THE RIGHT WAY1
Carol McManus spent over 30 years in corporate America working for the world's largest real estate organization. She has turned around failing offices and trained thousands of managers in the art and practice of leadership, communication, fiscal management, recruiting, and much more. In 2007, Carol left the corporate world to start her own executive coaching, consulting and speaking organization, Ywait4success. In this session, Carol will discuss the effective use of social media and LinkedIn in networking. Her own rocket to success was fueled by the effective use of social media and today she speaks on the subject and consults with entrepreneurs and corporate executives. Carol was recognized in 2010 as Coach of the Year by the National Association of Professional Women and continues today to coach C-level executives.
