Article: You're Never Old Enough :) 7 Signals it's time for a Career

You're
<http://internsover40.blogspot.com/2010/02/your-never-old-enough-7-signals-i
ts.html> Never Old Enough :) 7 Signals its time for a Career Transition

Job Seekers: Are You too old or "You're Never Old Enough" ?

Job Seekers Over 40 would you like to hear the world chanting "You're Never
Old Enough" (aka Y.N.O.E. spoke YOU KNOW) Or has that silent voice become
deafening inside your head chanting "you're much too old". The world for
a 40 plus year old job seeker today can be downright scary.
But........There is reason to be more optimistic then cynical or
pessimistic. But more on that later.

What Happened to My Career?
It doesn't matter what career you had chosen or perhaps wandered into (as
many did) for the last 20 or 30 years of your professional life.
The world has shifted off its axis. Is the planet Earth no longer rotating
at precisely the same rate or angle it did 10 or 15 years ago. Maybe the
only its all part of Global Warming. Or does it just FEEL different. You
were at the top of your professional game as a Banker, Automotive production
worker, Electronics Manufacturing manager, Insurance agent, Real Estate
agent, Airline Pilot, Home Depot electrical sales person or an HVAC
contractor. You had Money, Prestige and Job Satisfaction. But its not that
way RIGHT NOW.

7 YNOE ("You're Never Old Enough") Signals That a Career Transition is
Imminent.
Has some or all of these 7 YNOE signals been rattling around in your head or
perhaps quietly uttered by your co-workers:

1. My work Feels meaningless.
2. Our Industry is done.
3. It is only a matter of time before my job no longer exists.
4. I am working harder making less.
5. Remember when we used to have FUN at work
6. Auto pilot no longer works here.
7. There is no career future here.

So as we (you and me ) ponder the harsh facts. No need to repeat what the
Bureau of Labor Statistics has been telling us. Its simple that 1 in 5 of us
is not meaningfully employed. That's 45 million or so people.

Learn From those who have made a Career Transition:
You might want to drift for a moment from denial to reality.
Just for a moment. A brief moment let yourself Dare to Day dream in a world
in which the chant that Career Transition Adviser Bobby Edelman shouts:
"You're Never Old Enough :)". What does this mantra mean to all of us
oldies, aka over 40 skilled workers?
Because those who continue to make and remake themselves seem to have
eliminated age as a barrier. It is about gaining knowledge, experience,
networks of resources, drive and passion.

How many times do we see older workers successfully remaking themselves in a
new image and role. Its not about eliminated the past success and failures.
It is about building on the skills and experience of the past. Sometimes
with horrible short term failures but raising up to new sense of PURPOSE.

Successful Career Transitions.

* The Who:Woodstock 1969 = Superbowl 2010
* Jimmy Carter: President 1981 = 2010 Habit for Humanity (Largest
single home builder in Africa)
* Bill Gates:Windows 1981= 2010 Saving Millions in undeveloped
countries From Disease/Death

Yes the nay Sayers will say that these people were superstars, made tons of
money, had media, resources. But also see they all had some failures and
transitioned there careers. They dealt with external (socio-economic,
political) and internal (like death) changes.

* The Who had their key musician die (including Kieth Moon) and album
failures as music audience tastes change.
* Jimmy Carter has been considered one of the most ineffective
presidents by Historians- Need I speak the words:Iran hostage 444 day
crisis.
* Bill Gates- lets just say he missed the mark on the Internet search
business and social media buz (every hear of Google, Facebook and Linkedin).

So were does this leave us or you. My contention is that you can strike out
in a world full of ripe opportunity. We will explore this over the next
coming weeks. But lets just say if you were or are an Automotive Production
Manager you should be thinking about how will (not can) transfer your
skills, get re-educated and find a new meaningful career. Billions will be
spent in the next few years, through both private and government based
training and skills improvement programs, with the purpose of helping you
make a career transition.
The difference now is that YNOE: "You're Never Old Enough"

Article: Why You Need A Monster Business Network (CubeRules.com)

Posted by: "Eric Nilsson" ericnilsson@earthlink.net   eric_s_nilsson

Tue Feb 2, 2010 8:20 am (PST)

Why You Need A Monster Business Network

Here is the simple, straight-forward fact: 80% of all jobs are found through
someone you know.

Not through job boards, want ads or job fairs. Through someone you know.
That number comes from research, by the way. But it also makes perfect
sense. If you think about you and your career and think through how you
found out about a job, it most likely through a person you know. A person
at work, or someone part of your social circle or through a friend of a
friend.

Yet, in this age of mass layoffs, the people you know will scatter in the
wind, finding jobs with a multitude of companies. Most people will simply
let them go and scatter, never to be heard from again.

It is a big mistake.

We need our business network, both to help us on the job with professional
advice, but also to help each other find jobs. As much as technology can
help us with this effort (say on LinkedIn or Facebook...), the truth of the
matter is that a business network is still a person-to-person communication.

You need a business network growth strategy

If you think you can build and maintain a business network without doing any
work, you'll never get your network to the level and size you need to
successfully network. The first key, then, is knowing how you will continue
to build your business network.

Will it be through adding to your circle of friends? Will it be joining a
professional group that matches your work? Will it be doing informational
interviews inside your company to find out what is happening?

Unless you start with the premise that you need to increase your business
network and then following through on doing just that, your network will
wither and die. Like right at the time you need it the most.

You need a business network communications strategy

It isn't enough to just grow your network; you need to have good two-way
communication with it. Since technologies for networking is now out there,
you now have to do more than simply show up at your professional meeting one
a month and claim you communicated with your network.

If you are connected with people on LinkedIn, how are you communicating with
that group of people? How about on Facebook? How about at that professional
meeting once a month?

You see, the technology makes it easier to get in touch with people -- but
more difficult to maintain because you now have to think through how to
interact with people through each channel of communication.

Your Action Items

Here are your two action items: First, figure out who is in you business
network and determine how you will double the size of your network in the
next three months. Since most people have poor business networks -- but know
more people than are in the business network -- the challenge here is
incorporating all of the people you know into your network.

Second, you need to create a communications strategy for each channel of
your communications. How will you communicate with people so that you are
consistently dropping in communications deposits with the people you know?

The need for the business network is real. You can have an incredible
advantage in the professional arena by having a great business network that
thrives with communication.

Most people won't put in the effort to build a network. Will you?

3 questions to ask when creating Web-based user documentation

by Ellis [Pratt] on Wednesday, 13 January, 2010 . 5
<http://www.cherryleaf.com/blog/2010/01/3-questions-to-ask-when-creating-web
-based-help-content/#comments> comments

in SEO <http://www.cherryleaf.com/blog/category/seo/>

If Web-based user documentation can improve a company's Web site ranking,
then it makes sense for technical writers to take advantage of this fact.

So if you're writing Web-based <http://www.cherryleaf.com/webhelp.htm> user
documentation, how willing are you to change your writing style for Search
Engine Optimisation (SEO) considerations?

1. Would you decline - arguing for the purity of your words and the SEO
value of text that has a natural flow?
2. Would you agree to include certain key words in your headings and
body text to improve keyword density?
3. Would you agree to use black hat techniques
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hat> , such as using hidden text? After
all it's not illegal.

Indeed, do SEO experts and copywriters know how to write Web based content
better than a technical author?

We would suggest you agree with your sponsor for whom you're writing. Is it
for Google (and your search engine ranking)? Is it for your end users (and
support call reduction)? If you know the audience and the purpose of the
documentation then you'll be able to verify if the writing approach you
adopt will meet their requirements or not.

article: How to Stop Worrying About Your Job Search  (NetTemps)

Posted by: "Eric Nilsson" ericnilsson@earthlink.net   eric_s_nilsson

Tue Feb 2, 2010 7:55 pm (PST)

How to Stop Worrying About Your Job Search

Want to put an end to your job-search worries?

You can.

Or, at the very least, you can channel worries into positive action that
moves you closer to employment.

That's a message I got from the book, "100 Ways to Motivate Yourself," by
Steve Chandler, who writes:

The next time you're worried about something, ask yourself, "What small
thing can I do right now?" Then do it. Remember not to ask, "What could I
possibly do to make this whole thing go away?" That question does not get
you into action at all.

This idea has two important implications:

1. One small action is more productive than any amount of worry, and
2. Trying to solve all your job search problems at once can paralyze
you with confusion about where to start.

Let's tackle the second one first.

No matter who you are, you'll almost never go from unemployed to hired in
one day, just as you can't lose 50 lbs. in a week or master French in an
afternoon.

So stop tearing your hair out in frustration. You probably won't get hired
from one action, but many. It may take a week, or several months, but the
job you seek is out there and you will get it after you've taken enough of
the right actions.

With that said, here are three small, positive actions you can take today
that can stop your job-search worries and help you get hired faster.

Best part: Each of them requires only 15 minutes .

1. Call one person

We all know someone well-connected to potential job leads, with whom we
haven't spoken in months or years. Pick one person and call them today, just
to say hello.

Be sure to do one thing: Ask, "What would help you do your job better these
days?" Then write their reply down.

After you hang up, brainstorm ways to help your friend do his/her job. You
can ask other people in your network or Google for ideas. Keep going until
you find at least one promising idea. You will then have an excuse to call
your friend back tomorrow.

This will do two things: jump-start a dormant relationship and put you top
of mind with a well-connected friend, both of which will make them more
likely to send you employment leads.

2. Research one ideal employer

Have you ever submitted a resume to a blind ad online or in the newspaper,
one that told you nothing about the company? And how did that work out?

By contrast, the more you know about an employer, the clearer your path to
employment will become. It could be that a manager there went to the same
school as you, or you go to the same church as the CIO, or they sell to a
client you used to work for.

There are literally thousands of ways to make a connection with your next
boss and stand out from ordinary job seekers. But you'll never know until
you research the 10-20 companies you want to work for.

Why not pick one employer today and spend 15 minutes learning all you can
about their employees, corporate culture, clients, problems, and
opportunities?

Then try to make a connection based on your experience, education, and
network of contacts.

3. Write down five scary interview questions

What's the last question on earth you want to be asked in a job interview?

Is it, "Why did you leave your last position?" Or, "What are your salary
requirements?" Or, the dreaded, "What's your biggest weakness?"

Whatever questions scare you, write them down.

Something magical happens when you write a problem on paper. It's like
shining a light under the bed to check for monsters -- when you see things
clearly, most of the fear factor vanishes.

Also, any interview question that scares you has been asked before. Which
means there's an answer for it. And you can find that answer by searching
online, reading a book, or asking a friend who works in HR.

Now. What if I haven't addressed your job-search worries in this article?

No problem. Simply write down whatever is bothering you, whether it's your
age, lack of experience, the job market in your city, etc.

Then, spend just 5 minutes doing something about each worry today.

Will you solve all your job-search problems in 5 or 15 minutes? No. Will you
be taking action toward solving those problems? Yes. And action dispels
worry, just as sunlight dispels fog.

As Steve Chandler writes: "When you find yourself worrying about something,
ask yourself the action question, 'What can I do about this right now?' And
then do something. Anything. Any small thing."

Why not prove it for yourself and try it today?

Article: Out Of Work For Over A Year? How To Bounce Back  (NetTemps)

Posted by: "Eric Nilsson" ericnilsson@earthlink.net   eric_s_nilsson

Tue Feb 2, 2010 7:55 pm (PST)

Out Of Work For Over A Year? How To Bounce Back

It happens to the best of us. You hit a bump in the rocky road of your
career and find yourself out of work for longer than you'd like.

Being out of work for an extended period of time does more damage than just
a gap in your resume. It affects your self esteem, how you view yourself,
and what you believe you can bring to the table.

Everyone has doubts at some point in their career; this is your time. Know
that you can and will get past this bump.

So How Do You Bounce Back? Follow These 5 Steps Below.

1. Remind Yourself That This Is A Moment In Time.

Your career runs for multiple decades. That's a long period of time. What
this means is sooner or later a setback will happen in your career. It's
just the way things happen. All cycles have up's and down's and this is your
down. The good news is it's all up from here. Remind yourself that a job
will be there, and is waiting for you, right around the corner.

2. Reacquaint Yourself With Your Accomplishments.

When was the last time you looked at your resume? And when you do, does it
seem like your accomplishments were achieved by someone else? Just because
you have not performed a function in a while doesn't mean you can't perform
it anymore. It's like riding a bicycle; you never forget how. Spend quality
time with your resume. Read the bullets slowly. Remember the projects you
worked on and the people you worked with to obtain these results. Remind
yourself that these are your accomplishments, which are something to be
proud of. Just because it's been a while, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

3. Create In Your Mind What You Want To Happen Next.

I believe that people get stuck in the day-to-day doldrums of life when they
don't have something to look forward to. You may not know when your next job
is coming, but you can get ready for it. Ask yourself what you want next.
Where do you want to work? What location? What type of people? How much do
you want to be making? When you can see what you want, clearly and
powerfully, you can get it. I find that when people are out of work for a
while, they can't see themselves in their jobs anymore. The amount of time
that has passed only matters to you. Visualize what you want so you can get
back to work again quickly.

4. Don't Give Up.

Most people don't take discouragement well. When they first lost their jobs,
they had vigor and excitement. They got up everyday and had people to call
and job search related activities to work on. Over time, the momentum and
activities diminished. That caused them to stop or slow down. Don't let this
happen to you. You only need one job and one person to give it to you. The
work you put in now will bring results; you just haven't seen them yet. A
job search is not an instant gratification pursuit. It's a process that
brings results over time, on its timetable and not yours. So, you have to
keep going.

5. Believe In Yourself.

Most of the time, we are our own worst enemy. We tell ourselves why
something cannot be done before someone tells it to us first. This approach
keeps you safe from rejection and failure, but it also holds you back. This
economy may be forcing you to get out of your comfort zone and into new
territory, all great for your personal growth. (Even though it does not feel
so great most of the time.) Many people who come to me want to be challenged
in their career. It's what's missing in their jobs and their lives. Well,
this is your challenge. Will you rise to the occasion or let it get the best
of you? You already have a track record of achieving great things. This will
be another one to add to your list.

So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it might as well be
a life you love!
